Three eastern provinces in Afghanistan suffered through a disastrous earthquake Tuesday night that measured 5.9 on the Richter scale. Numbers of the dead are at 1,000 and climbing.
“Because it (the earthquake) happened in the middle of the night, people were in their homes and, unfortunately, many of those homes then collapsed,” says Todd Nettleton with Voice of the Martyrs USA. Some families have disappeared.
Nettleton continues, “We have seen in the last year the economy of Afghanistan has gone downhill; it is in shambles. The Taliban wanted to be in charge of the whole country. What do they do in a situation like this, where the people are desperate for help and assistance? The Taliban are fighters; they’re not governors. They don’t a have the training for those kinds of jobs.” Not only that, the Taliban does not practice servant leadership.
As local Christians respond to this disaster, they will risk being discovered as they serve survivors in the name of Christ. “As this aid is delivered, there will be some questions; they will be watched,” Nettleton states. “Pray for our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan,” implores Nettleton. “They are serving the Lord; they are telling people about Jesus. That is an incredibly risky, incredibly brave thing to do. We need to be sure they are a regular part of our prayer time, not only when there’s an earthquake.”
Lord Jesus, our hearts break for the devastation in Afghanistan! We bow before You as the only hope for the people of that nation and lift our requests to Your throne. Infuse Your followers, serving You in the rubble and chaos around them, with wisdom, courage and stamina as they are Your hands and feet on the ground. May they hear Your voice guiding their every step. We ask that they shine Your light in the darkness around them and that they will not be hindered in any way by anyone from providing physical and spiritual assistance to those in need. You are a miracle working God, and we ask for miraculous intervention over the country and people of Afghanistan! In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”—Psalm 32:7-8
