The Invitation of a Father: Pursuing the Wisdom of God
Text: Proverbs 2:1–5
Introduction
Before we continue with Proverbs chapter 2, I would like us to briefly recap what we learned in chapter 1.
In Proverbs 1:1–6, we discovered the purpose of the book of Proverbs. Solomon tells us that these proverbs are given to provide wisdom, knowledge, understanding, instruction, and discretion.
In Proverbs 1:8–19, Solomon warned his son about the influence of sinners. The practical lesson for us was clear: distance yourself from people who do not lead you closer to God. The company we keep shapes the direction of our lives.
In Proverbs 1:20–23, wisdom is personified as a woman crying out in the streets, calling people to repentance and warning them of the judgment that will come upon those who refuse God's wisdom.
Finally, in Proverbs 1:24–33, we saw the consequences of rejecting wisdom. Those who refuse God's counsel eventually suffer the results of their own choices.
Today we continue into chapter 2, where the message becomes even more personal.
A Father's Call to His Son
Chapter 2 opens with the words, "My son..."
This is more than a greeting. It reveals a loving relationship between a father and his son.
God established this pattern of relationship to pass His truth from one generation to the next. A godly father has the responsibility of teaching his children the wisdom of God.
In the same way, God our heavenly Father desires to impart His wisdom to us.
One of the greatest responsibilities of a Christian father is to sit with his children, teach them God's Word, and point them to Christ. Sadly, many fathers place greater emphasis on earthly success and worldly wisdom than on the wisdom of God.
A loving father wants his children to avoid the mistakes he made. He desires to see them walk in greater wisdom than he did. He wants a close relationship with them.
That is exactly God's heart toward us. He lovingly invites us into fellowship with Him so that we may walk in His wisdom.
The "If" Verses – God's Invitation to the Fundamentals
I like to call Proverbs 2:1–4 the "If Verses."
These verses present the conditions that prepare our hearts to know God. They are God's invitation to the fundamental disciplines of the Christian life.
It is as though God is inviting us to sit at His table and saying, "Come, talk with Me."
Many people desire God's blessings, but often neglect the pathway that leads to them. God lovingly directs us back to the fundamentals.
If we embrace these truths, then verse 5 becomes a reality:
"Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God." (Proverbs 2:5, KJV)
To fear God is not merely to be afraid of Him. It is to reverence Him, trust His wisdom, submit to His authority, and obey His commands in every area of life. Whether God gives us much or little, we continue to honour Him because He alone is worthy.
The Fundamentals We Must Practice
From verses 1–4 we find six practical applications.
Receive God's Word. Be willing to hear what God says with humility. V1
Hide His commandments in your heart. Treasure God's Word so that it shapes your thinking and your actions. V1
Incline your ear to wisdom. Make a deliberate choice to listen when God speaks. V2
Apply your heart to understanding. Do not simply hear God's Word; seek to understand and obey it. V2
Cry out for wisdom and lift up your voice for understanding. Pray earnestly. Ask God for wisdom, believing that He gives generously. V3
Seek wisdom as you would seek silver or hidden treasure. We pursue money with determination; how much more should we pursue the wisdom that leads to eternal life? V4
Church, I invite you to live by the Word of God. Read it. Study it. Search it diligently. Dig deeply into its truths. Treasure it in your heart. Most importantly, obey what God teaches.
An Invitation to Those Who Do Not Yet Know Christ
Perhaps you are here today and you are not yet a child of God.
The starting point is to recognise that your sin separates you from God.
Jesus began His ministry by calling people to repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15).
The Apostle Paul clearly explains the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:1–4:
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.
He was buried.
He rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.
Jesus Christ died in your place so that you might be forgiven and reconciled to God.
Today God is inviting you to repent, believe the gospel, place your trust in Jesus Christ, and follow Him as your Lord and Saviour.
If you have never done that, today is the opportunity to respond to His gracious invitation.
Conclusion
Proverbs chapter 2 begins with a loving Father calling His children to Himself.
God does not hide His wisdom from those who seek Him. He invites us to receive His Word, treasure His commands, seek Him earnestly, and walk in reverent fear before Him.
May we accept His invitation, pursue His wisdom with all our hearts, and live lives that honour Him.
