Tuesday, 17th of the blessed month of Rabi’ al-awwal, A.H. 714 (1July1314)
I had the good fortune of kissing his hand.
One of those present asked THE MEANING OF ·UR’S. “UR’S,” he replied, “may mean the celebration of a wedding, or it may mean the decamping of a caravan for the night.”

MORALS FOR THE HEART

Extract from a lecture of Dr. Maulana Fazlur Rahman Ansari on Urs
We are assembled here to celebrate the death anniversary of one of the greatest spiritual luminaries of Islāmic history, namely Sayyid Khwāja Mu‘inuddīn Chisti al-Ajmeri al-Sanjari.
This great man lived a life for the sake of Allāh; “in God and with God.” Consequently, he lives in our hearts up to this day.
Although Khwaja Syed Mu‘inuddīn lived more than a thousand years ago, his name has been commemorated all the time, not only at the place where he lived, but also in other countries.
This is the proof of what a great (Persian) ṣūfī has said:
“He whose heart has been endowed with the light of love for God, he never dies.”
All those who lived and died for the sake of Allāh, their footprints are indelibly imprinted on the face of history.
It is called an Ur’s – implying that it is an occasion for being joyful and happy, expressing our happiness to Allāh for having bestowed upon us that great blessing. It is actually an annual conference for those who believe in the mission and work of this man.
He dedicated his entire life to the fulfilment of the Prophetﷺ’s mission, bringing life and light, virtue and piety, goodness and beauty into this world.
As all ceremonies become rituals in the end, people forget the real mission and remember only the outer form.
This demonstration of love for him who loved Allāh and His beloved Prophet ﷺ is itself an act of piety.
(What we witness today is disciples turning this into a show)
