Friends,
Here is the first news received of a family planning to make a bequest to the DOMINICAN FORMATION FUND which will enable us to once again accept novices for the Dominican Order from countries Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho. We would love to hear similar news from others.

“We will try and set up something in our wills as you have requested to keep your community going in SA”.

My grateful reply to them was:

“You and your family are truly wonderful. I have been working so hard pushing the idea of bequests all over Facebook but at the same time wondering whether the idea would work. The computer tells me that over 100 people have liked those posts on Facebook, so I have been sitting on a cliff-edge between doubt and hope. Your email has hugely increased the hope that others will follow your lead. I will have to find a way of asking them to let me know”.

Please follow their lead

Just a reminder about the Dominican formation fund for our student priests. Everyday at our community mass I concelebrate with the other priests and my mass intention each day is for the benefactors of this fund. I hope you are one of the benefactors.
As I said last week you can donate either by adding a codicil to your last will and testament, or by making a periodic deposit into our banking account with the reference “Appeal Fund + your name”.

The advantage to you of making a bequest in your will is that you will not have to make a sacrifice now. The fund will only benefit from it when your estate is wound up but our prayers for your mass intention begins immediately. May God bless you.

Ascension Sunday year C introduction

Waiting eagerly for the Spirit

The first reading (Acts 1:1-11) has Jesus telling his disciples “You, not many days from now, will be baptized with the Holy Spirit”, and “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses . . .”. We are all called to witness to Jesus in our society.

The second reading (Ephesians 1:17-23) motivates us to do this, as Jesus, having ascended into heaven, is now “far above every Sovereignty, Authority, Power or Domination”. In our society this means he is above every government, ideology, economic force or anything else that dominates our lives. He is more important than they are. We must bear witness to that.

The gospel (Luke24:46-53) describes how Jesus told them to wait for that spirit “which the Father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with power from on high”.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, before you ascended you promised to be with us in spirit, the ‘Holy’ spirit. Lord, help me to open my heart and mind to be evermore receptive to this ‘Holy’ spirit, so that I can always feel your presence in my life, and in the lives of all your people. Amen

6th Sunday of Easter – introduction year C
As we approach the Feast of Pentecost, which is the feast of the commissioning of apostles to go forth and evangelize the world, we are presently faced with conflict among our church leaders as to what is the meaning of evangelization today. Is it just the proclamation of traditional doctrines, or is it something more?
The first reading (Acts 15:1-2.22-29) narrates the very first such conflict and how it was solved.
The second reading (Apocalypse 21:10-14,22-23) directs our attention to “the Lord God Almighty and to the Lamb”. It is from them that we get enlightenment. So that brings us to Pentecost.
This Sunday’s gospel (John 14:23-29) says, regarding Pentecost, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything”. That was Jesus speaking to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. He added “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid”. So we can be sure that if we listen to the Holy Spirit this present conflict will be solved and we will be at peace. Jesus says “My own peace I give you”.
Let us pray: Lord, you wish your Church to be one in mind and heart. Inspire all believers to work for this unity. Send your Holy Spirit on those who are being contentious, that they may regard all who believe in you as brothers and sisters. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

5th Sunday of Easter year C – introduction

Creating some courage among the disciples

The first reading this Sunday (Acts 14:21-27) has the apostle saying “We all have to experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God”. Promoting that kingdom on earth was the project that Jesus promoted, and it got him executed. But he rose again.

The second reading (Revelation 21;1-5) is all about this new earth. “Here God lives among men. . . . He will wipe away all tears from their eyes”. It is a message of tremendous hope.

The gospel (John 13:31-35) tells us how this can come about – through loving one another. We know that this love must be universal, crossing all the walls that divide us from one another.

Let us pray: O God, we hear of churches being attacked in West Africa, and people being killed merely because they were attending Mass. We hear about the Ukraine. Please, Lord, wipe away the tears from our eyes, and by your grace imbue their friends and families with hope that they will join their loved ones in your heavenly kingdom, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

4th Sunday of Easter. Year C. Introduction
We are called to follow Jesus on his journey
The first reading (Acts 13:4,43-52) briefly describes a journey of about 300km taken by apostles Paul and Barnabas through the centre of Turkey. Just like what Jesus experienced on his journeys, they get a mixed reaction, but they kept going.
The second reading (Apocalypse 7:9,14-17) tell us of “a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language” standing before the throne of God. This shows what the apostles set out to do, to lead all people to that destination.
In the gospel (Jon 10:27-30) Jesus says: “The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice”. Let us all get to know Jesus and follow what he tells us.
Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, your travels led you from a settled life in Nazareth to death and resurrection in Jerusalem. But you ended up at the right hand of your heavenly Father. Jesus, as I continue on my journey of life, I want to keep following you on the path you chose. I rely on you to lead me to that same destination. Amen
