DANKBAARHEID

Lukas 4:18–19

Many people say they believe in Jesus. Scripture shows that belief alone is not the same as discipleship. The Bible draws a clear line between acknowledging who Jesus is and actually submitting our lives to Him.

1. Belief can be intellectual, following is relational.
Scripture shows that belief can exist without obedience. James writes that even demons believe in God, and tremble (James 2:19). They recognize who God is, yet they do not love Him or obey Him.

Following Jesus goes beyond agreeing with facts about Him; it involves trust, surrender, and relationship.

2. Jesus Himself made this distinction.
Jesus warned that not everyone who calls Him "Lord" truly belongs to Him.

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father." (Matthew 7:21)

Knowing His name and using religious language does not equal obedience. Jesus ties genuine belonging to a life shaped by God's will.

3. Belief does not automatically change direction.
Following Jesus always involves a turning.

Jesus said, "If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me." (Luke 9:23)

Belief can remain comfortable. Following costs something. It reorients our desires, decisions, and priorities around Christ instead of self.

4. Grace saves us, but grace also trains us.
Salvation is a gift, not a reward for behavior. Yet Scripture says grace is not passive.

"The grace of God...trains us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives." (Titus 2:11-12)

Believing receives grace. Following allows grace to reshape how we live.

5. Faith that follows produces fruit.
Jesus taught that real connection Him always shows itself over time.

"By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciple." (John 15:8)

Fruit does not earn salvation, but it reveals life. A tree that is alive eventually shows it.

6. Following Jesus involves obedience rooted in love.
Jesus did not define love as emotion alone.

"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." (John 14:5)

Obedience is not about earning God's approval. It flows from knowing Him, trusting Him, and valuing His words above our own instincts.

Believing in Jesus may acknowledge who He is. Following Jesus submits to who He is.

Scripture invites us not just to agree with Christ, but to walk with Him, learn from Him, and allow Him to lead every part of our lives.
