JESUS AUTHENTICATED THE SCRIPTURES
LUKE 24:25-27
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. (KJV)
In our studies so far, we have learnt that the scriptures or the bible define the Christian faith. Any practice, belief system or teaching that is not from the bible cannot be said to be Christianity. We said that the bible contains a reliable account from eyewitnesses. They documented this account during the lifetime of other witnesses.
This means the account documented in the bible was found to be authentic by those other eyewitnesses who were alive. This means that anybody today who tries to question the authenticity of the bible is being mischievous. It has already gone through the reliability and authenticity test by eyewitnesses who were alive when it was documented.
From our opening text, Jesus used the scriptures to teach his disciples. Christianity is about Jesus Christ. He is the message and faith of Christianity. Anything or person outside Jesus Christ is not Christianity. Anybody who claims to be a Christian should have believed on Jesus as their saviour and should be growing through the study of the message of Christ. This means that whatever Jesus said, taught and practiced becomes the standard of the Christian faith.
During the time of Jesus on earth, he used the writings of Moses, the prophets and the Psalms,
Luke 24:44,
“And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me”.
Luke 24:27,
“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself”.
The use of the Old Testament scriptures gives absolute authentication of the scriptures. Even though there is a debate that not all the books of the Tanakh, which comprises the Torah (law), the Nevi’im (the prophets and the Ketuvim (writings), were canonized, it does not change the core message of the scriptures, which is salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
The essence of the scriptures is to affirm that God’s salvation is through faith in Christ.
John 5:39-40,
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life”.
The scriptures are used to testify of Christ and salvation through faith in his name.
The books that were canonized were to meet the standard of Jesus or his apostles to have quoted or referred to them. If Jesus quoted from a book, it must be authentic. If Jesus’ disciples used it, then it must be authentic. Another standard was that the book must communicate a message that other books used directly by Jesus and the apostles communicate. Other books that were not canonized did not meet the reliability or authenticity test set out by the early believers.
Every canonized book of the scriptures is directly or indirectly connected to Jesus. Any other book not canonized or to have been discovered later cannot be used for Christian doctrine.
Even though such books may not contain any evil content but for the purpose of ensuring a very strong and unquestionable authenticity, such books did not meet canonized standards.
CONFESSION: The canonized scriptures are enough to teach the Christian faith.
