JESUS AUTHENTICATED THE SCRIPTURES

LUKE 24:25-27
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. (KJV)

In our studies so far, we have learnt that the scriptures or the bible define the Christian faith. Any practice, belief system or teaching that is not from the bible cannot be said to be Christianity. We said that the bible contains a reliable account from eyewitnesses. They documented this account during the lifetime of other witnesses.

This means the account documented in the bible was found to be authentic by those other eyewitnesses who were alive. This means that anybody today who tries to question the authenticity of the bible is being mischievous. It has already gone through the reliability and authenticity test by eyewitnesses who were alive when it was documented.

From our opening text, Jesus used the scriptures to teach his disciples. Christianity is about Jesus Christ. He is the message and faith of Christianity. Anything or person outside Jesus Christ is not Christianity. Anybody who claims to be a Christian should have believed on Jesus as their saviour and should be growing through the study of the message of Christ. This means that whatever Jesus said, taught and practiced becomes the standard of the Christian faith.

During the time of Jesus on earth, he used the writings of Moses, the prophets and the Psalms,

Luke 24:44,
“And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me”.

Luke 24:27,
“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself”.

The use of the Old Testament scriptures gives absolute authentication of the scriptures. Even though there is a debate that not all the books of the Tanakh, which comprises the Torah (law), the Nevi’im (the prophets and the Ketuvim (writings), were canonized, it does not change the core message of the scriptures, which is salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

The essence of the scriptures is to affirm that God’s salvation is through faith in Christ.

John 5:39-40,
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life”.

The scriptures are used to testify of Christ and salvation through faith in his name.

The books that were canonized were to meet the standard of Jesus or his apostles to have quoted or referred to them. If Jesus quoted from a book, it must be authentic. If Jesus’ disciples used it, then it must be authentic. Another standard was that the book must communicate a message that other books used directly by Jesus and the apostles communicate. Other books that were not canonized did not meet the reliability or authenticity test set out by the early believers.

Every canonized book of the scriptures is directly or indirectly connected to Jesus. Any other book not canonized or to have been discovered later cannot be used for Christian doctrine.

Even though such books may not contain any evil content but for the purpose of ensuring a very strong and unquestionable authenticity, such books did not meet canonized standards.

CONFESSION: The canonized scriptures are enough to teach the Christian faith.

THE MISUNDERSTOOD GOD (PART1)

Theme: The Revelation of Jesus Christ
James 1:5,13,16
Why would James say "do not err my beloved brethren"?
Underline the word "God can not be tempted with evil" ...
Verse 13...Do not err about who?
The word err is the greek word "Planao"...it's not like a mistake...it means being led astray.
Let's look at the application of the word planao...
Matt 18:12
Gone astray...or led astray.
1 Cor 6:9
"Be not deceived"...he was not talking about making a mistake...he was saying someone is responsible for the way you are led astray...
James was not inferring to any incidence...verse 13...the word let no man say is not just about persons but about instances or situations...it includes persons and experiences…

James 1:16
James was writing concerning an impression you can have from the scripture...because within the scriptures were such evidences.

Let's look at this impression in Job 42:5
"I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee"...

Job was letting you see that his opinion of God was formed by a third party...so 41 Chapters of the book of Job was written from rumours...Jobs relationship with God until chapter 42 was speculative...he never had a personal experience with God.

For 41 Chapters Job seeked God in fear…
Job 1:5
"It may be that my children have sinned against God"...Sin consciousness...he was shielding his children from the evil he thought God will do...he was living in fear.

So when James said let no man say….it included Jobs experiences...
Luke 9:52,56
Jesus rebuked his disciples and said...You know not what manner of spirit ye are of...the disciples had been with Jesus and yet didn't know his character...that God does not destroy.

So James
So when James said let no man say….it also included the experiences or impressions by the Prophets...

James 1:13
It means it is impossible to say you are tempted of God...
Matt 4:1, Matt 4:3
It's a fact that God does not try people...how can God try you when he is all knowing...without trying anyone he already knows what would be the outcome, so he doesn't need to try anyone.

1 Cor 7:5
"That Satan tempt you"...so satan is the one who tries or tempts people.
Eph 2:10, Acts 5:9, Acts 15:10, 1 Cor 10:9, 1 Cor 10:13
God's role in Temptation is that he provides a way of escape...

Gal 4:14, 1 Tim 6:9, Heb 3:8,9
Observe that those who used the words tempt God, God tempted...use them in error...hence James statement, "let no man say".
James 1:12
Is it God tempting him and at the same time rewarding him? No!

2 Peter 2:9
"The Lord knoweth how to deliver"...so the role of God in temptation is that he delivers the Godly out of temptation...

James 1:13
So let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God...for "God can not be tempted" neither does he tempt anyone.
1 Cor 10:13
Temptation is common to man...

Who tempted Jesus?
Matt 4:1,7
It is clear that the devil was the one tempting Jesus...God and the devil can not both be tempting people...so the devil tempts and God provides a way of escape or delivers us from temptation.

Luke 4:12, Luke 10:25
God does not test with evil...so whenever the statement God tempted someone is made, it is made in ignorance and in error.
At no point will God be emotional about his Nature!

James states clearly that there is a consistent character of God...God is not under pressure..so don't say God is the one tempting you.

James 1:14, 15, 16
Everyman is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust...so error is found amongst men...God has been misunderstood among men.

James explains God's character "Every Good and every perfect gift"...so God's giving is good and perfect...every good or finished gift cometh down from above...
James 3:15
James is describing men here...

James 3,13-16
"Envying and strife in your heart"...for where envying and strife is there is confusion and every evil work...

In James 1:17
He says if it is from above, the nature would be good and perfect...absolute.
You can't find evil in God and his actions...God is Good in his nature…

Whatever God produces, inherent in it is goodness and perfection...accomplished and finished gifts.

James was saying God is consistent, that he never changes and that he doesn't react because he is all knowing…

So, there is no evil in God...the devil is evil and the founder of evil…
God is a good God and whatever is born of God, overcometh the world.

GLORY TO GOD!

THE PROOF OF THE FAITH

2 TIMOTHY 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (KJV)

We said that the message of the bible is Christ Jesus,

John 5:39,
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me”.

It speaks of salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. The writings of Moses, the Psalms, the gospels and the epistles all speak of salvation through faith in Christ.

We also said that the scriptures is the authority in teaching or explaining anything about the Christian faith. No historical document, mystical book, archeological document, or latter-day saint document has the authority in explaining or teaching the Christian faith outside the scriptures.

Whatever any document or literature would seek to teach must be salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Any religious material that has any other teaching or explanation which is contrary to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus is not of God.

Any religious leader who claims to have any supernatural encounter that contradicts salvation through faith in Christ Jesus is demonic. The scriptures alone is enough for teaching the Christian faith.

From our opening text, another profitability or usefulness of the scriptures is reproof. Reproof is from the Greek word “elegchos”, which is evidence or conviction. The same word “evidence” was used in

Hebrews 11:1,
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”.

The scriptures is the evidence of our faith or the basis of our conviction. The evidence of what we teach and believe is the scriptures. We believe it because it is documented in the scriptures. What is the proof that when a person believes the gospel, they are saved? The proof is the scriptures. What is the proof that Jesus resurrected from death on the third day? The proof is the scriptures.

Luke 24:46,
“And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day”.

The scriptures teach that Christ will suffer and resurrect on the third day. Anytime we want to have proof of anything concerning the Christian faith, the scriptures is our only proof. If it cannot be proven from the scriptures, then it cannot be of the Christian faith. What is the proof that we are justified by faith without works of the law? It is the scriptures.

There is no authentic or approved evidence of our faith outside the documented scriptures. We don’t use supernatural experiences as proof of the Christian faith. We don’t use the visitation of a supernatural being as proof of what we believe and teach. We don’t use results as proof of our faith. The fact that a practice works is not enough proof.

There are things that may work, but if we cannot prove or have evidence from the scriptures, we cannot teach them as our faith. Trying to prove the Christian faith outside the scriptures has produced much error in the faith. We don’t have things like “as for me, this is how it worked for me,” therefore, I believe it. If what we know as workable or resultful cannot be proved by the scriptures, it is an error. If we are asked the reason, proof or evidence of our faith, we must refer to the scriptures.

Whatever conviction or persuasion we have must be based on the scriptures, but not on what people say or experience. What are your convictions or persuasions in the Christian faith? Are they based on the scriptures?

CONFESSION: My Christian convictions are based on the scriptures.

THE BIBLE

2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (KJV)

The Bible, which is also called the scriptures in a generic context, is the book or literature of the Christian faith. The protestant bible has 66 books. Although the catholic bible has more than 66 books, including the apocryphal books, it does not change the core message of the scriptures, which is salvation through faith in Christ Jesus,

2 Timothy 3:15,
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”.

The 66 canonized books in the protestant bible have enough proof or evidence of salvation through faith in Christ. This means that if 100 books or 10 books were canonized, it would have the same message of communicating salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

This makes the bible a book on God’s plan of salvation, which is by faith in Christ Jesus. Any other book or literature that is a Christian book or literature must communicate the message of salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Therefore, the debate of adding or removing from the books that were canonized is unnecessary when it comes to the core message of the bible.

From our opening text, the scriptures is profitable or useful, which is the Greek word “ophelimos”. The profitability of the scriptures is in the area of doctrine or explanation, which is “didaskalia” in Greek. This means that every explanation of our Christian faith is by the use of the scriptures.

Whatever cannot be explained by the scriptures cannot be a Christian experience or faith. The scriptures have more authority than any supernatural experience or encounter. Jesus Christ taught from the scriptures

Luke 24:27,
“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself”.

Upon his resurrection, he did not tell his disciples of the things he encountered in the grave to show that he was dead and now alive. He rather took them through the scriptures for them to see that he was the Messiah to die and resurrect on the third day.

Luke 24:45-46,
“Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day”.

Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus that,

Galatians 1:8,
“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed”.

This means any message from angels or supernatural beings that is not consistent with the scriptures is erroneous. As believers, we must uphold the authority of the scriptures in explaining or teaching anything concerning the Christian faith.

Anybody who claims to have had a supernatural encounter and come out with any teaching or doctrine outside the scriptures is making a false claim. What we believe or teach is based on the scriptures and not human experience, culture or tradition.

The fact that an activity or a belief system worked pr produced the required result does not make a teaching in Christianity if it cannot be explained by the scriptures.

CONFESSION: What I believe and teach is based on the scriptures.

THE WORD BECAME MAN

JOHN 1: 14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (KJV)

We have explained that Jesus pre-existed as the word. Before he manifested as a man on earth, there was no human being on earth or heaven called Jesus. The only time the word became flesh was when he manifested through the Virgin Mary.

This means that there was no man called Jesus in heaven or on earth before his manifestation. He existed in heaven or the Spirit as the Word. Jesus never appeared on earth anywhere as a man.

From our opening text, we see when the word became flesh or man. The activities of Jesus were seen and communicated by the prophets in the Old Testament but he never manifested as a human being or flesh.

This occasion of Christmas celebrated by many people across the world as the adopted date to celebrate the birth of Jesus should remind us of the miracle of the word taking the form of man and coming to dwell on the earth. This word was with God and this word was God. Therefore, Christ on earth is the manifestation of God in the flesh on earth.

He came as the express image of the Father. God who was not accurately known can now be known in Christ. God is no more a mystery. Jesus said; if you have seen me, you have seen the Father. The totality of the Father, his power, plan, purpose, love and all that he is was all contained in the man called Christ.

Everything of the Father was in Christ. God is accurately known in Christ. He became a man so that he could save man. The purpose of Christ on earth was to save man from sin and its consequences. Jesus is God manifested in human flesh.

1Timothy 3:16,
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory”.

It is also corroborated in

Philippians 2:6-7,
“Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men”.

Let us reflect on God’s nature and love manifested in Christ as we commemorate this special occasion. Jesus is the exact and complete image of God. You cannot know God without knowing Jesus. Jesus at work is God at work. What does not fit into the character of Christ cannot be the character of God.

The testimony of Jesus about himself supersedes any other testimony by the prophets. The blessing of the season is the blessing of accurately knowing God in a man we can relate to.

Colossians 1:15,
“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature”.

It is only God who can remain God and still manifest himself as a full man for the purpose of salvation. Jesus is therefore full God as a deity and full man as the saviour.

CONFESSION: Christ is the manifestation of the totality of God on earth. I know God accurately in Christ.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

LUKE 2: 10- 11
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. (NIV)

There are so many controversies about the celebration of Christmas. It is a known fact that Jesus was not born on 25th December. It is an adopted date to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

There are many opinions and varied history about why 25th December was adopted. These opinions about this date are the reason some people do not want to celebrate Christmas saying it was originally a date for celebrating a pagan god. Some people also hold the opinion that a birthday celebration is unchristian and for that matter, we should not celebrate Christmas at all.

Some people see Christmas as evil because of the commercialization and the worldly manner some people celebrate the occasion. Whatever the controversies about Christmas, the most important thing is that Christ was born and with this good news, we rejoice or celebrate.

In Luke 2:10-11,

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord”.

The news of the birth of Jesus brought joy to men. We have no pattern or record in the epistles of the celebration of Christmas. However, we have no doctrine in the epistles against being joyful and celebrating the life of the man Jesus. We have exhortations in the epistles to be joyful always.

We have exhortations to hail Jesus as Lord. Christmas is not the celebration of a day but the celebration of a person who is Christ Jesus. The life of Jesus can be celebrated at any time or day. If Christians have chosen 25th December to celebrate the goodness of God in the birth of Christ, praise God. We only have to do it to the glory of God.

Jesus is the reason for Christmas. We celebrate Jesus and his purpose for mankind. There is no special blessings or fortune about the day 25th December. It is an adopted day based on convenient factors.

Therefore, those who celebrate Jesus on 25th December and those who do not celebrate Jesus on 25th December are all the same. Nobody sins or is wrong. The celebration is not to make 25th December a special day than other days. It is not the worship of a day but the worship or celebration of Jesus in a day.

Whatever godly means of joy and happiness can be expressed, go ahead and make merry. We are happy Jesus became a man to save us. We are happy Jesus became man to reveal God accurately to us. This happy event that took place in history is worth emphasizing, it is worth being happy about it and worth expressions of joy. We are happy. Glory. Merry Christmas.

CONFESSION: Christmas is the celebration of Jesus, not a day. I thank God for the birth of Jesus.

MARY DID NOT GIVE BIRTH TO JESUS

JOHN 8:56-58
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. (KJV)

From the eyewitness account of the bible concerning the birth of Jesus, it was emphatically stated that Mary gave birth to Jesus. This fact is not contestable. The angel who visited Joseph told him that Mary would give birth to a son whose name shall be called Jesus,

Matthew 1:21,
“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins”.

Matthew also recorded in chapter 2 where Jesus was born,

Matthew 2:1,
“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem”.

Luke also accounted in chapter 2,

Luke 2:7,
“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn”.

This means that from the eyewitness account of the bible, Jesus was born by Mary. This also shows the humanity of Jesus Christ, that he was born as a man.

Even though the date of his birth cannot be accurately known due to the time and circumstances of his birth, the early church fathers adopted 25th December to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Even though there are many opinions expressed about the date, it does not change the fact that Jesus was born in a particular day and his arrival or birth must be celebrated. The whole world must rejoice because a saviour has been born.

From our opening text it gives another context for looking at the birth of Jesus. Jesus said he lived or existed before Abraham. This also shows that Jesus lived or existed before Mary. If Jesus lived or existed before Mary, then one can say in a context that Mary could not have given birth to Jesus Christ.

From what we know about birth, the life of every human being begins when an egg and s***m are fertilized in the womb. It goes through a period of about 9 months for a child to be born. However, concerning Jesus Christ, there was no s***m from a man for fertilization.

Since Jesus existed before Abraham, the life of Jesus did not begin in the womb of Mary. Jesus lived as the Word of God who became flesh (John 1:1-14). Jesus is God who became man (Philippians 2:6-7). Jesus is the visibility of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15). Jesus is God (John 10:30-33).

Since Jesus is God, man could not have given birth to God. This means Mary could not have given birth to God.

God became man in Jesus. God manifested through the womb of Mary. The womb of Mary was the vehicle or channel God used to come to this earth as man for the purpose of the salvation of man.

The birth of Jesus was not a normal birth process we know. It was a miracle of God entering the womb of a woman to be born. Therefore, from eye eyewitness account, Jesus was born by Mary but from the context of revelation, Jesus was not born by Mary. Jesus manifested through the womb of Mary. We must see Jesus beyond the eye witness account and see him in the context of revelation knowledge.

CONFESSION: I see Jesus beyond the eye witness account.

TRUE HOLINESS

EPHESIANS 4: 24
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. (KJV)

In our previous studies, we explained the word repentance. We taught that repentance is not about a change of behaviour or feeling sorry for a wrong act. Repentance is about a change of mind. This change of mind to the unbeliever is to believe the gospel and to the believer, it is to renew the mind.

Another misunderstood word and its application is the word ‘holiness’. True holiness has been misunderstood by many believers. What they call holiness is not holiness at all. Holiness is not an activity; It is not how you talk, how you dress or your ability to stay celibate.

Churches have been formed from these wrong understandings of holiness. Such people think that not watching TV, not applying lipstick or not perming your hair is holiness. Some even go to the extent that they use their false understanding of holiness as their qualification to heaven or salvation.

They believe they are saved because of the way they dress or their fashion standard. They see other believers who don’t seem to have their falsely imposed acts of holiness as evil, not saved or agents of Satan.

Holiness is a state or nature. Holiness is to be set apart for God. In the Old Testament, animals and utensils and days were called holy because they were set apart for God. A day was called holy.

This means that if objects were called holy, then, holiness is not an activity or dressing. Anything, day, object, place or person set apart for God or made for the purpose of serving God is called holy. Anything related to God or wherever God dwells is called a holy thing or holy place.

Every man in Christ is holy because in Christ we were created holy after God's own nature. We belong to God forever. We are a special breed of beings having the Spirit of God in us. We were born again with the divine nature of God. This makes us separate from ordinary men. This is our holiness. The uniqueness of the believer is in his new nature in Christ. Good conduct or behaviour does not make a person holy. However holy people are expected to put up good conduct.

We are holy because we are in Christ. Therefore, Christ is our holiness. If you have Christ, you are truly holy. Our holiness does not increase or reduce by our works. We were born holy in Christ.

We have the Holy Spirit living in us. This makes us holy. We are God’s children. This state or nature of the believer makes him holy. Anytime we mention holiness in relation to the believer, our minds must go to who Christ has made us not conduct, behaviour or fashion. However, we have the responsibility to produce works consistent with who we are in Christ. Good works do not make a person holy but holy people produce good works.

CONFESSION: I am in Christ, born of God with the Holy Spirit in me therefore, I am holy unto the Lord. Hallelujah

REPENTANCE

LUKE 24:47
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (KJV)

The term repentance has been so wrongly used in many Christian settings that many believers do not know the actual meaning of the word.

Romans 2:4 gives a wonderful example and explanation of what biblical repentance is. The Biblical meaning of repentance speaks of those who are “not knowing,” that is, they are "agnoeo". They do “not know that the kindness of God leads them to repentance.” Repentance in the New Testament means “metanoeo", which is A CHANGE IN THINKING.

How does this term apply to the believer and the unbeliever? To the believer, repentance is the renewing of the mind but to the unbeliever, repentance is a change of mind by believing the gospel of Christ. Since faith in Jesus Christ is all about belief, then the “action” necessary for repentance is not a change of behaviour, but a change of thinking!

When you change your thinking your behaviour changes as well. When our belief system or thinking process changes, a change of behaviour becomes so much easier.

As believers, we persuade men to change their thinking about Jesus Christ, for them to understand and appreciate the depth of his love for them as a Saviour. Jesus commanded his disciples to go and preach repentance,

Luke 24:46-48,
“And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things”.

Here the disciples were to make men change their minds about God. Changing their mind about God is to believe what Christ has accomplished in his redemptive work.

Peter also used the word repentance.

Acts 2:38,
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”.

Here, Peter was not referring to the people changing their behaviour but was talking about changing their minds about God, which is to believe what God has done in Christ. Jesus also used repentance before his death,

Matthew 4:17,
“From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”.

Jesus was not expecting a change of conduct or behaviour from the people. He was expecting a change of mind about God and this change of mind is to believe on him as the Saviour. Anytime we preach repentance and we relate it to a change of behaviour or conduct, we are in error.

Repentance is about the mind, either to believe the gospel or get your mind renewed to align your thinking to who you are in Christ.

CONFESSION: I renew my mind daily. I feed on the redemptive work of Christ. I see Jesus Christ, especially in His rightful role as Saviour and Redeemer and I persuade men about it.
