BELONGING IN CHRIST

Welcomed • Loved • Known • Equipped • Restored • Sent

What does it mean to truly belong?

Join us at 8am and 10am on Sunday, 7 June 2026 for the start of our Post-Pentecost sermon series, Belonging in Christ, as we discover God's invitation to be part of God's family and grow together as disciples of Jesus.

The journey continues beyond Sunday worship through our Masande Community gatherings, where we will share, learn, pray, and encourage one another in small groups.

Whether you are new to the church, returning after some time away, or have been part of the St. Peter's family for many years, this series is for you.

Come on Sundays. Join a Masande Community. Explore what it means to belong in Christ.

To the Mothers of St. Peter’s and all other mothers.

Today we give thanks to God for your love, strength, wisdom, and faithfulness. Whether you are a biological mother, spiritual mother, grandmother, aunt, guardian, mentor, or caregiver, your nurturing presence reflects something of God’s own love in the world.

Thank you for the many ways you comfort, guide, teach, pray, and sacrifice for others, often in ways unseen.

May you be encouraged by the words of Jesus: “I will not leave you orphaned……” (John 14:18). As you have cared for others, may you also know that the abiding presence, peace, and love of Christ is with you always.

May God bless and strengthen you today and always.

With much love and gratitude.

Happy Mother’s Day!!!!

What a blessing it was to have Rev Nick Kerr as our preacher today!

Rev Nick is a retired Anglican priest from the Diocese of Natal, and his message was both encouraging and truly eye-opening.

In 1982 Rev Nick and his wife Barbara Kerr, who were teachers at the time, visited Israel as enthusiastic Christian Zionists, expecting to be the witnesses of biblical prophecy being fulfilled in the return of Jews to the Holy Land. A “chance” meeting with a Palestinian Christian family and their unwillingness to support Christian Zionism stating that it contributed to their oppression and dispossession caused Nick and Barbara some confusion and soul searching.

Nick’s deep concern for the situation in Israel/Palestine, together with his unease at the Church’s ambivalence, persisted over many years. Nearly four decades later, in retirement from full-time ministry, he devoted three years to researching the historical roots of Zionism, including its Christian expression, and subjected both to careful and rigorous analysis.

In the book he goes back to the antisemitism prevalent in Eastern Europe in the 19th century which caused young Theodor Herzl to conclude that antisemitism was an “incurable illness”. This culminated in the horrendous Holocaust. The only apparent solution was for Jews to have a national home of their own, which when it happened, resulted in the displacement of the Palestinians.

Nick traces these developments historically, politically, theologically, biblically, psychologically and through the many individual stories of those caught up in the struggles and conflicts that have occurred in the Holy Land over the last 150 years.

In summary the book deals with the following:
1. History and Politics: the rise and growth of Zionism (19th and 20th centuries).
2. Religion: the Church and Christian Zionism.
3. Various responses to the situations of Jews and Palestinians.
4. Conclusions and prospects.
5. Appendices
6. Postscript (2024)

In view of the tragic situation unfolding in Gaza, the West Bank, and other Middle Eastern countries at present, it is important to understand the long chain of events that have lead up to this explosion of destructive and deadly violence.

The book is,
"A Wound Unhealed: Does Christian Zionism Contribute to Palestinian Suffering?"

Rev Nick will be giving a talk on his book!!!

Today we celebrate a remarkable achievement by one of our own, Sam Ngumeni, who has been appointed as the new Group CEO of Woolworths Holdings Limited.

Sam’s story begins in the most humble of circumstances, yet it is marked by extraordinary perseverance and grace. Born on a farm, living in a small corrugated iron home, his earliest years were spent in simple surroundings that held big dreams. As a young child, his family moved to the “flêtse in Chicago” in Elsies River on the Cape Flats, where his mother carried the weight and responsibility of raising her children with courage and deep love. Through tireless hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to her family, she planted in Sam and his siblings the values of resilience, faith, and determination. Values that would guide him throughout his life and help shape the man he has become.

Sam’s community, in “Chicago” Elsies River, is often spoken about only in terms of gang violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and many other social challenges. Yet Sam’s example challenges and transforms that narrative. From this community emerged a man grounded in faith, shaped by perseverance, sacrifice, and enduring commitment. His journey stands as a powerful testimony that with God all things are possible!!

It is especially meaningful that this milestone comes as Sam celebrates 30 years of dedicated service with Woolworths, an extraordinary achievement that speaks to his loyalty, leadership, and steadfast commitment over three decades.

As his rector and friend, I am immensely proud of him. His story is not only one of personal success but also a beacon of hope for many young people growing up in communities where the odds often seem stacked against them.

The family of St. Peter’s Church, Mowbray, warmly congratulates Sam on this historic milestone. We also congratulate his beloved wife Ethel, their children Leeroy, Chelsea, Samantha, and the wider family.

Sam, we wish you every blessing as you step into this new role. Be assured of our prayers and our continued support. May you always be reminded that the God who has guided your journey thus far will continue to walk with you as you lead with wisdom, humility, and courage.

Go with God, Sam.

Lenten Invitation – St Peter's Church, Mowbray

As we find ourselves within this holy season of Lent, we warmly invite you to journey with us in prayer, reflection, and community.
Lenten Sunday Services

Join us each Sunday as we gather around Word and Sacrament, allowing God to renew and refocus our hearts. Lent offers us sacred space to return to the Lord, to deepen our faith, confront what weighs us down, and rediscover hope in Christ.

Lenten Taizé Services on Tuesdays at 10am
Our Taizé services offer a quiet, contemplative space with simple chants, Scripture, and silence. In the busyness of life, this is an opportunity to slow down and rest in God’s presence.

Masande Community Gatherings
We also encourage you to connect more intentionally in smaller faith communities during the week:
• Tuesdays at 7:00pm – at the residence of Jonathan Bezuidenhout in Mowbray
• Wednesdays at 10:00am – at church
• Wednesdays at 6:30pm – at church
• Online gathering – hosted by David Wardle

Our Masande Communities will follow this year's Lenten theme: “Walking with Jesus through Compassion, Prayer, and Renewal”, a journey of the heart as we follow Christ more closely this season.
Read more about the Lenten theme here: https://bit.ly/4aYJJXl

These gatherings are spaces of prayer, sharing, Scripture reflection, and mutual encouragement as we walk the Lenten road together.
Lent is not meant to be walked alone. Whether through Sunday worship, Taizé prayer, or Masande community, there is a place for you.
