When Jesus is described as “friend”, what does this mean for us as His followers? A helpful way of seeking answers to these questions is to look at Jesus’ disciples who spent the most time with Him.

From the time Jesus met Simon Peter, it appears that they rarely left each other’s side. Jesus even stayed in Simon Peter’s home in Capernaum—they were close friends who had their ups and downs.

Simon Peter said “no” to Jesus, and he disappointed Jesus. In fact, Jesus saved His highest praise and sternest rebukes for Simon Peter.

When Jesus asked Peter “Who do you say I am” in Matthew 16:13-23, Peter was being shaped by Jesus. In Matthew 17:7 Jesus reminds His friends to not be afraid – He can be trusted and depended upon.

Jesus’ friends knew that they were loved, accepted forgiven and free (Romans 8:28, Hebrews 2:18). What a wonderful thing to be called a Friend of Jesus. And we are friends with one another through our unity in Christ!

The name of Jesus as the Son of David is a significant title that gives us, as His followers, great confidence not only in what Jesus has done for us, but who He is! In fact, on seventeen occasions in the New Testament, Jesus is described in this way.

So why is this significant? At the start of Matthew’s gospel, a significant time is spent stating the genealogy from David to Jesus—some 1000 years. The significance of this line of genealogy is that Jesus was the fulfilment of the prophecy of the seed of David (2 Samuel 7:12-16).

The promised Messiah would come from the line of David, and so this is spelt out in Matthew 1 as the genealogical proof that Jesus was a descendant of Abraham and David through His earthly (and legal) father Joseph.

The genealogy in Luke 3 traces Jesus’ line through Mary, and so Jesus is a descendent through adoption through Joseph, and blood through Mary. But primarily, the title “Son of David” is more than a statement of his physical genealogy.

It is a title that indicates His Messianic standing. When people referred to Jesus as the Son of David, this was an indication that He would be the deliverer they had been waiting for–the ultimate fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies.

When Jesus took on the role of a servant, this was a great challenge to the leadership model of the days in which He conducted His ministry.

Jesus laid aside His majesty in order to show people the love of God and how we should live and serve one another. It was prophesied in Isaiah 42:1-4 that Jesus would come as a servant, and in Mark 10:45 Jesus said this of Himself: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”, and in Luke 22:27 Jesus said “For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table?

But I am among you as one who serves.” But Jesus also modelled this role of servanthood through His actions—washing His disciples’ feet—a role left to the least of servants to honour visitors to one’s home as an example of what this servanthood might look like in a practical way.

At that time, the role of a servant was so foreign to the experience of leaders that this was a revelation to some, and a challenge to others. We thank Jesus for showing us how He wants us to love one another.

For those of us who have been Christians for a long time, the effect of the name of Jesus as the Son of God has probably been taken for granted (well, for me at least).

So what does it mean? In Philippians 2:6 we read that Jesus, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage.”

In Hebrews 1:8-9 we read that “But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever.” When Paul said that Jesus is the Son of God, we know this to mean that He is fully man but fully God.

Being the Son of God, we know this to mean that Jesus is in the nature of God.

And so we can have confidence that to know the Son is to know the Father! What a wonderful comfort for us as God’s children that we too share this sonship. Praise God for Jesus!

The Hebrew term “Messiah” (or Mashiach) is translated literally to the term “anointed”. To be anointed is to be consecrated, to be set apart for a task.

The term Messiah, when given to Jesus, is a very significant declaration that Jesus would be the ultimate fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy.

We know that prior to Jesus, the role of the high priest within the tabernacle was a role that involved spiritual cleansing rituals in order for the priest to enter the holy of holies and present an offering before God.

The high priest was set apart for this task, and would enter this part of the tabernacle with a rope and a bell around his waist in the event that before God’s holiness he would be found unclean and struck dead.

In Jesus we find the One set apart for the task, once for all time, so that we can present our requests to God in full confidence that we can go through Him and no longer through the high priest. Praise God for Jesus, the Messiah who has saved His people!

The role of a shepherd was well understood during the time of Jesus’ ministry. A shepherd’s job was to take care of the sheep.

When Jesus described Himself as the good shepherd, He was describing His character as unique. The Greek word kalos means beautiful, noble, wholesome, and good.

As a good shepherd, Jesus is describing His character, His righteousness and beauty. Sheep are known to be some of the most vulnerable of animals. When described as a shepherd, Jesus is also telling us something about ourselves and our need for Him.

Jesus, our Good Shepherd, not only takes care of His sheep, but He also paid the redemption price to call them His own—those who have received eternal life through His blood.

All of us sheep have “gone astray.” However, Jesus rescued us by perfectly fulfilling His Father’s will through His death. We thank God for providing us with a great protector in Jesus, who would go to the ends of the earth to protect His flock.

When we consider Jesus as Wonderful Counsellor, we need to look at this in context. “Wonderful” depicts a God who is out of the ordinary, and can do amazing things. And “Counsellor” indicates a wisdom beyond what we have in ourselves.

Historically in Hebrew culture, a counsellor referred to a king giving counsel to his people. We are the people of God in this way.

When we consider Jesus as Mighty God, we are reminded of His protection and provision. He is strong when we aren’t. He will protect us when we need to be defended.

He is our strength. When we consider Jesus as the Prince of Peace, we are reminded that we serve a God of peace, who came to bring ultimate peace to the world. That was His mission and ministry, and without Him, there is no peace. Jesus came not to bring peace to the world as in the absence of war, but peace between God and man who were separated by sin.

He died to reconcile sinners to a holy God. We thank God for His goodness in bringing us ultimate peace and rest in Christ.
