Overcoming Temptation

Scripture reading:1Corintians 10,13

No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings.but God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength.instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.

As Christians we are sufuring by tempting thoughts, feeling guilty that our strength are not beyond our temptation.we feel ashamed just for being tempted.and this is not true we will never grow in temptation.but we can consider temptation a compliment because satan does not have to tempt those who are already doing his evil will,it is not a sign of weakness or worldliness.but it is a normal part of being human and living in a fallen world.we must not be surprised or shocked or discouraged when it happens.Paul advises that "Remember that the temptations that comes into our lives are not different from what others experience" In other words it is not a sin to be tempted but it's a sign that the devil hates us not a sign of weakness or worldliness even Jesus was tempted, yet he never sinned.temptation only become a sin when we give in to it but when we are tempted and not sinned we become conquers.refuse to be afraid of temptations but face the challenge of being tempted and by God grace you will conquer in Jesus name amen

Prayer: Father I thank you about all the temptations that I have endured and the ones that are coming ahead of me that I will conquer them all because you have given me all the strength in Jesus name amen.

DISAPPOINTED DISCIPLES

Scripture Reading: Luke 24:1-27

But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. (Luke 24:21–22)

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus were disappointed. They had followed Jesus with hopes that He would fulfil their desires for a free Israel. Like most Jews, their vision of the Messiah was shaped by the political struggles of their people. Since the Assyrians and Babylonians defeated their nation, the Jews had suffered as a subjugated people. As a result, they viewed the promised Messiah as a political liberator. The two disciples of Jesus were disappointed that Jesus had not lived up to their expectations.

They used to believe that God had visited them through Christ; now, that hope was gone. They saw the miracles of Jesus and had great expectations, but now the dream was dead. Walking with them was the living Jesus, yet hope was gone from their hearts.

Listening to their narration, we see that the two disciples lived by people’s opinions. They based their knowledge of Jesus on what other people were saying about Him. They knew about the news that had come from the women who went to Jesus’ tomb. They were astonished by the news but did not express any opinion as to what they believed. They did not know whether to accept the report of Jesus’ death or the announcement of His resurrection.

The two disciples went through life with questions but no answers. They reported the last few days' events without ever referring to the scriptures or what Jesus had said about His resurrection. Listening to them, we hear the words of followers of Christ who have no assurance about God, Jesus or themselves. Some of us have our spiritual eyes closed to the presence of God and our ears shut to His voice.

Nothing defeats a person more than defeated hope. When hope dies, faith dies. All that these men should have done was to look back at the miracles of Jesus. They should have remembered what He said about the times in which they lived. Jesus had prepared them for the moment they were in, but they forgot about everything He taught them.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to know you for myself. Open my eyes to your presence and my ears to your voice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

JESUS, A STRANGER AMONG FRIENDS

Scripture Reading: Luke 24:1-27

Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?” (Luke 24:18)

There is a humorous side to the conversation Jesus was having with His two disciples. As readers of the Bible, we know that the traveller with the two disciples was Jesus. But as participants in the story, the disciples were clueless. Their entire conversation was about Jesus, yet they called Him ‘stranger’ when He showed up.

In the minds of the two disciples, what happened in the past week was like a fast-forwarded movie—from the triumphant entry to the arrest of Jesus, followed by a night-long trial and a late morning conviction that led to a noonday crucifixion. Three hours later, Jesus was dead. A quick burial followed His death. Before the disciples could grasp what was happening, news came that Jesus was alive.

Clearly, the events of the past week were so well-known that Cleopas could not imagine anyone in Jerusalem who did not know about them. He and the other disciple could not imagine that the stranger who had just joined in their conversation was the same Jesus they were talking about.

We can learn some lessons here. It is possible to walk with Jesus for a long time and still see Him as a stranger. Here are disciples of Jesus who walked with Him for 11 kilometres and could not sense His presence. That is the kind of relationship some of us have with Jesus. We treat Him as a walking companion who is a stranger to us. That means we know of Him but do not know Him. We read His word but do not hear His voice.

Is Jesus a stranger to you? Can you feel His presence when He is near? Do you recognize His voice when He speaks? We must not mistake church activities for intimacy with the Lord Jesus. We can be present at every revival meeting in town and yet find ourselves disconnected from the Lord. Some of us ask for God’s power but cannot recognise His presence. May the Lord open our hearts and minds to always discern His presence on our journeys in life.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know you are always with me. Forgive me when I don’t recognize your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

JESUS DREW NEAR

Scripture Reading: Luke 24:1-27

And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. (Luke 24:14-15)

When Jesus rose from the dead, He showed Himself to many of His disciples. About 500 people saw and interacted with the resurrected Lord. Among the earliest people to see the Lord after His resurrection were two disciples travelling from Jerusalem to Emmaus. The two men had been to Jerusalem for the Passover. They were now making the 11km trip back to their village. These disciples of Jesus were baffled by all the events that had taken place in the past week.

These two disciples of Jesus might have been part of the crowd that cried Hosanna to Jesus and welcomed Him to Jerusalem. So much had happened from then on to shake their faith and set them thinking. That’s what the two men on the road to Emmaus were trying to figure out when another traveller joined them. They were returning from Jerusalem with broken hearts. They had seen so much to dampen their faith. In that state of mind, Jesus approached them.

1. Jesus drew near to them. The scripture says, ‘Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them’. The real Jesus walked with them, but they did not recognize Him. They walked with Him, but they did not know it was Him. They were just happy to have someone to walk along with them to help ease their boredom. It is interesting to note that Jesus was the one who drew near to them and not the other way round. He initiated the relationship.

2. Jesus walked with them. After joining the two men on the road, the Lord journeyed with them. He did not reveal Himself to them, but He simply walked the journey with them. He showed interest in their conversation and kept them company.

Jesus knew each of His disciples and went to them where they were. He understood their concerns. We don’t know why the Lord chose to present Himself to these two disciples. They were not prominent members of Jesus’ team, yet the Lord knew them and went to them. We can all be encouraged that Jesus knows each one of us and joins us on our journeys.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you come to me wherever I am and wherever I go. With you, I am never alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WHO ARE YOU?

Scripture Reading: John 1:19-28

Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” (John 1:22)

How would you respond to the question, ‘who are you?’ Sometimes, we answer that question by stating our name or vocation. Other times, we answer the question by our gender, ethnic grouping or a relationship we share with someone else. All of those answers give us parts of our identity.

The Jews sent priests to ask John the Baptist, ‘who are you?’ They wanted a direct answer from John to clarify their uncertainties about him. How would you have answered the question that was posed to John the Baptist? As Christians, our identity or who we are must always be related to God. We are who we are because of who God is.

We must answer the question of who we are by considering:
• Who am I before God? This involves how God sees me and how I see myself in the eyes of God. How close am I living to my true identity? If I’m a child of God, how close am I living to that identity?
• What does God want to do with my life? This is when you seek to live out God’s purpose and not your own.

1. I am made in God’s image. This is where our identity starts. God created us. We did not make ourselves; neither did we emerge by a spontaneous natural process of evolution. We have an Owner who designed us to be like Himself; as such, all of our abilities have their origins in God. The image of God is a general quality we share with all humanity.

2. I am redeemed by faith in Christ. Being created in the image of God is general to all. However, our redemption is unique to only those who have accepted Christ as Lord. In the Garden of Eden, humanity fell into sin. The image of God was broken. To fix the broken image, God came down in the form of a Man to pay for our redemption. Without redemption, we have a broken relationship with God. With redemption, we are ransomed, healed and restored to God.

3. I am an ambassador of Jesus Christ. After Christ had redeemed us, He recruited us to represent Him here on earth. As a result, we do not live to please ourselves again, but to please the One who redeemed us. Now, our lives are God’s witness to the world. He uses us to show the world what He can do for a life that is surrendered to Him.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you are the source of my being. I belong to you fully. Use me for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
