Symbol of the true meaning of Easter.
Promoting the true meaning of Easter: Members of the Knights of da Gama with three of the crosses which they will be selling at every performance of the Durban Passion Play in the Playhouse from 6 – 16 April.
One of the projects of the Westville Council is the notion of “a crucifix in every home”. To that end, literally many thousands of crosses have been hand made locally and sold.
The Catholic Order of the Knights of da Gama is a South African Catholic brotherhood of men engaged in an ongoing programme of spiritual, social and charitable works. It is registered in South Africa as a non-profit organisation. There are about 1500 knights across the country.
The Durban Catholic Players’ Guild present the15th Durban Passion Play, fondly known as the “Oberammergau of Africa” performed by a large cast of 130 people who volunteer their time and skills as part of their Lenten preparations. It is an epic scale dramatic production depicting Jesus' Passion, covering the final period of his life from his visit to Jerusalem to his ex*****on by crucifixion and ending with the Resurrection.
It comes to the Playhouse Drama Theatre from 6 – 16 April for a 14-performance season over Easter. (Book at Webtickets).
Crosses will be for sale in the foyer of the theatre at every performance.

Keeping the flu bugs at bay!

It is now officially autumn. In theory we should soon be enjoying cooler weather and longer evenings. Change in season also often means an increase in colds and flu. 130 or so Durbanites are doing their very best to keep the flu bugs at bay. They are rehearsing for the Passion Play and really don’t want to get sick!

What has become a Passion Play tradition is the serving of “shots” at rehearsal. Nothing untoward of course (being Lent) rather a potent “Flu Brew” to keep everyone healthy.

The Durban Catholic Players’ Guild present the15th Durban Passion Play, fondly known as the “Oberammergau of Africa” performed by a large cast of 130 people who volunteer their time and skills as part of their Lenten preparations. It comes to the Playhouse Drama Theatre from 6 – 16 April for a 14-performance season over Easter. (Book at Webtickets).

The Flu Brew is:
3 litres boiling water.
8 lemons, squeezed.
3 roots of ginger peeled and sliced.
3 sticks cinnamon.
6 cloves.
100ml honey.

Bring all ingredients to the boil. Simmer for 20 minutes and strain.
Drink hot or cold.

Christians Celebrate Ash Wednesday

Today (Wed 22 February) is Ash Wednesday, which signals the start of Lent - the most holy time of year for Christians across the world. The 40 days of Lent is a time of reflection, repentance and fasting, starting with Ash Wednesday, and leading up to Easter where we mourn the death of Jesus and rejoice in His rising from the dead.

Lent is a particularly auspicious time this year for 130 or so volunteers - they are giving up their time to rehearse and perform in the staged story of the meaning of Easter. The Durban Catholic Players’ Guild present the15th Durban Passion Play, fondly known as the “Oberammergau of Africa” performed by a large cast as part of their Lenten preparations.
