Why Boxing Day Still Matters to Us as Christians
Written by Josta 'sbo' Nkosi | TACSA
As a Christian, I understand that Boxing Day is named after the tradition of giving “boxes” of food, money, and gifts to servants, workers, and those in need on the day after Christmas. It was a day set aside to share what remained after celebration, not to store it away. This meaning speaks deeply to me, because it reminds me that generosity was always at the heart of this day. Boxing Day was never meant to be about ourselves, but about recognising others and responding to their needs.
This day challenges me to take my faith seriously beyond celebration. After enjoying family, food, and rest, Boxing Day calls me to look outward. When I ignore this day, I miss an opportunity to live out my faith in a real and meaningful way.
For me, taking Boxing Day seriously is about turning belief into action. It is a reminder that Christianity is not seasonal and does not end with Christmas Day. Whether through giving, serving, or simply showing kindness, this day invites me to walk in love and responsibility. I believe that when we honour Boxing Day with purpose, we keep the true spirit of ubuntu and faith alive beyond celebration.
Happy Boxing Day!
