To lead is also to serve!
At the Business in Education breakfast I was invited to this morning, I heard Mr Brand Pretorius say these words, “To lead is also to serve!” I just smiled and thought, YES!
He was speaking about how you can be firm, but fair. You can be kind without being weak. You can be results driven, without being ruthless.
This is a guy who is a former GM of McCarthy SA. And he was saying in leading, you need to serve.
This got me thinking…
Leadership isn’t about charisma, it’s about character. Leadership isn’t about effort, it’s about results. Leadership is not about promises, it’s about results. Because promises not kept turn into lies. Leadership is not about ideas, it’s about effective implementation.
The acid test of leadership is whether you get the job done or not. Simple.
We lead our families, schools, business, work and so forth. But are we passing the acid test of leadership? Are we serving as we lead?
If not, then I think we need to step aside. If we are leading without servicing.
Learn, teach and share.
Are you a boss or are you a leader? Think about it long and hard!
Don’t be like that Bishop who was quick to proclaim on a corrupt government, like the voice of the church should do. (I guess)
But he forgot that the very government he says is corrupt are the people he feeds communion to every other Sunday. The very people who pledge to ensure that he has a salary. The very same government that his organizations knock at their doors request money for event after event after event.
To lead is to serve.
If he had realized that he had moved from serving the people and he had started serving himself and his clique, he wouldn’t have made such a proclamation.
Always remember, “To lead is to serve!” And not just serving a select minority, but to serve majority of the people you are leading!
Learn. Teach. Share.
