I’ve found a Friend, oh, such a friend!
All pow’r to Him is given,
To guard me on my onward course,
And bring me safe to heaven.
Th’ eternal glories gleam afar,
To nerve my faint endeavor;
So now to watch, to work, to war,
And then to rest forever.
These words from James Grindlay Small's hymn give us some insights into the doctrine of perseverance. It is a wonderful Biblical truth that all true believers will persevere in their faith right until the end. They will persevere because their Father in heaven, and Jesus their Saviour, have undertaken to preserve them.
Of course, this doesn't allow us to be passive; we must persevere! But our own efforts — watching, working, fighting — are rooted in the confidence that Jesus himself preserves us with a power that is far beyond our own power.
