Today is Ascension Day. It's a celebration, a feast day, on the Christian calendar.

It used to be a public holiday in South Africa. Many people complain that the holiday has been taken away.

It is amongst the few celebrations that has not been commercialised. So it doesn't "pay" to be remembered.

Church services in the day are generally poorly attended. People are busy.

But beyond this, Ascension doesn't make much sense in an "out of sight, out of mind" culture.

Ascension is awkward for people who no longer see the earth as flat, and firmly sandwiched between heaven and hell.

So what do we celebrate?

1. Jesus does not leave us as orphans. He sends the Holy Spirit so that we can know God's presence with all people, wherever we are and whatever the time and circumstances.

2. During Jesus's life, he prayed for people and miracles happened. People were healed. They were delivered. They were provided for. They were saved. Jesus is at God's right hand - a position of favour and power. Jesus still prays for you and for me. And God still acts to give and restore life.

3. Jesus tells his disciples that he goes to prepare a place for us. When all is ready, He will return to fetch us. He will take us home.

4. It is as Jesus is blessing and commissioning his followers to go into all the world and share the Good News, that Jesus disappears into the clouds. Throughout his life, his death and resurrection Jesus removed the barriers between God and us and between us and our neighbours.
