Jesus' Humility

Philippians 2:6-8 KJ21
who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, [7] but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. [8] And being found in the fashion of a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death-even the death of the cross.

Rejection as a Prophet

Mark6:4 Jesus said that a prophet is never honored in his hometown. But that doesn’t make such a person’s work any less important. Many leaders and workers for God face the same disrespect at home that Jesus did. A person doesn’t need to be respected or honored to be useful to God. If your friends, neighbors, or family don’t respect your Christian work, pray that their rejection will encourage your faith and that this will motivate you to keep serving God with all your heart.

Mark 5:17 After such a wonderful miracle of saving a man’s life, why did the people want Jesus to leave? They were undoubtedly afraid of his supernatural power. They could not control, contain, or appease him like they could their pagan gods. They may have also feared that Jesus would continue to destroy their pigs, which were their livelihood. Evidently, they cared nothing for the needs of the man. They would rather give up Jesus than lose their source of income and security.

Christians everywhere are subject to misunderstanding, ridicule, hostility, and even harassment by unbelieving friends, employers, and family members. And no one escapes catastrophe, pain, illness, and death—trials that, like persecution, make us lean heavily on God’s grace. For today’s readers as well as for Peter’s original audience, the theme of this letter is hope.

This verse from James 4:3 highlights the importance of motives and intentions when asking for things, particularly in prayer. It suggests that if our requests are driven by selfish desires or a focus on personal pleasures, we may not receive what we ask for.

Some key takeaways from this verse include:
Selfish motives: When our requests are driven by a desire for personal gain or pleasure, rather than a desire to honor God or serve others.
Prayer and intentions: The verse emphasizes the importance of examining our motivations and intentions when praying or making requests.
God's perspective: It reminds us that God sees our hearts and motivations, and responds accordingly.

This verse encourages us to reflect on our motivations and priorities, and to seek God's guidance and wisdom in our requests.

Bridle Your Tongue

In James 3:2-3
What we say and what we don’t say are both important. To control our speech, we must not only say the right words at the right time but also rein in our desire to say what we shouldn’t. Examples of the sins of an untamed tongue include gossiping, insulting, belittling, bragging, manipulating, teaching what is false, exaggerating, complaining, flattering, and lying. Pause before you speak to ask yourself, Is what I want to say true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?

JOKES/JESTING

The Bible mentions jesting in several contexts, often cautioning against inappropriate or hurtful behavior. Here are some relevant passages:

Proverbs 26:18-19: Warns against pretending to be a jester or jokester when you're actually causing harm or troubles

Ephesians 5:4: Advises against coarse jesting or crude joking, encouraging instead a spirit of gratitude and reverence.

Proverbs 10:23: Contrasts the wise person who avoids foolish jesting with the fool who delights in it.

In biblical context, jesting can be seen as:
Inappropriate: When used to mock, belittle, or hurt others.
- *Foolish*: When it leads to sinful behavior or distracts from what's truly important.
- *Unbecoming*: When it's crude, coarse, or unbecoming of a believer.

However, the Bible also acknowledges the value of:
*Appropriate humor*: When used to bring joy, relieve tension, or build relationships.

Ultimately, the Bible encourages believers to use their words and actions wisely, considering the impact on others and honoring God in all they do.
