The Solemnity of the Ascension invites us to reflect deeply on the glorious moment when our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into Heaven after completing His earthly mission. Traditionally believed to have taken place on the Thursday of the sixth week of Easter, this sacred celebration is now observed on Sunday in many countries, allowing the faithful to gather more fully in prayer and thanksgiving.
The Ascension is not the story of God abandoning His people, but rather the story of Christ remaining with us always through His presence, His Spirit, and His Church. Before ascending to the Father, Jesus entrusted His mission to His disciples (and to each one of us.) He commanded us to go forth and proclaim the Good News to all nations, reminding us that we do not journey alone, for He promised: โI am with you always, until the end of the age.โ
As the disciples looked toward Heaven, two angels appeared and proclaimed that Christ would return in the same way He ascended. This reminder fills us not with fear, but with hope, perseverance, and expectation. The Ascension therefore becomes both a promise and a mission.
As Christians, we are called to be active participants in the life of faith. Christianity is not passive; it is a living call to transform the world through the Gospel. The mission of Jesus is now our mission. Despite adversities, trials, and uncertainties, we are encouraged to move forward with courage, knowing that the Lord Himself sends us and walks beside us.
Faith is never meant to remain private. It must be lived, witnessed, and shared. Every person evangelizes in different ways according to their vocation and calling. Parents evangelize by raising their children in faith, love, and prayer. Young people evangelize through courage, conviction, and joyful witness in a world often searching for hope. Teachers, clergy, religious, workers, and communities evangelize through service, compassion, integrity, and acts of mercy.
Every Christian carries the responsibility to practice charity, uphold justice, and continually grow in holiness. Through our words, actions, and daily lives, we become witnesses of the Risen and Ascended Christ. Let us go forth with faith, hope, and courage, proclaiming Christ to the world and remembering always that He remains with us, now and forever.
