Reading for Today:

Leviticus 9:1–10:20
Psalm 25:1-7
Proverbs 9:13-18
Mark 1:23-45
Notes:

Psalm 25:6, 7 Remember…Do not remember…remember. These are not concerns about God forgetting something, but the psalmist’s prayer reminders about God’s gracious covenant promises and provisions, all of which are grounded upon His “goodness‘ sake” (see v. 11, “Your name’s sake”).

Mark 1:24 What have we to do with You…? Or, possibly, “Why do You interfere with us?” The demon was acutely aware that he and Jesus belonged to two radically different kingdoms, and thus had nothing in common. That the demon used the plural pronoun “we” indicates he spoke for all the demons. the Holy One of God. See Psalm 16:10; Daniel 9:24; Luke 4:34; Acts 2:27; 3:14; 4:27; Revelation 3:7. Amazingly, the demon affirmed Jesus’ sinlessness and deity—truths which many in Israel denied and still deny.

Mark 1:40 l***r. Lepers were considered ceremonially unclean and were outcasts from society (Lev. 13:11). While the Old Testament term for leprosy included other skin diseases, this man may have actually had true leprosy (Hansen’s Disease), or else his cure would not have created such a sensation (v. 45).

Mark 1:41 compassion. Only Mark records Jesus’ emotional reaction to the l***r’s desperate plight. The Greek word appears only in the synoptic Gospels and (apart from parables) is used only in reference to Jesus. touched him. Unlike rabbis, who avoided l***rs lest they become ceremonially defiled, Jesus expressed His compassion with a physical gesture.

God bless

DAILY DEVOTION – 16 MAY 2024

BE A BELIEVER THAT WHOLE-HEARTEDLY ENGAGES IN SERIOUS PRAYER WITH GOD!

“Awake, you heavy drinkers, and weep; and wail … For a nation has invaded my land, mighty and without number … It has made my vine a waste and my fig tree a stump. It has stripped them bare and hurled them away.” Joel 1:5–7 NASB.

Insight: It was a time of trouble. Many faced financial problems. Crime and immorality swept throughout the land. There were wars and violence. Yet many were preoccupied with pleasures, tolerating sin.
As we consider the prophecy God gave Joel, what seems clear is that this was a world similar to our own. In many ways, conditions seemed hopeless. But God called on His people to open their eyes and realize how badly things had deteriorated. Instead of giving up, they could turn to Him.

Life Guide: Although conditions seemed bleak, God promised hope! As His people repented and called on Him, He promised to be zealous for His land and pour His Spirit on all flesh as in Joel 2:18–29. He would intervene! Some countries have a National Day of Prayer. It’s a time for all Christians to pray and be serious about prayer! It’s a time to look at the problems we face as a people, humble ourselves, repent of our sins, seek God, and cry out for His help.

Challenge: Right now, ask God to open your eyes. As in the time of Joel, this is a time to seek the Lord. Return to Him, pray, and confess your sins and the sins of our land. Pray for our leaders. Pray for elections. Ask God to forgive our sins and heal our land, send revival, and pour out His Spirit as He did on the Day of Pentecost.

Prayer: Almighty and Heavenly Father, forgive us Your people for being complacent and tolerating sin. We need You now more than ever. Pour out Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus mighty name. Amen.

DAILY DEVOTION – 15 MAY 2024
A LIFE FREE FROM DEPRESSION IS FOUND THROUGH JESUS CHRIST!

“Do not fear … you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.” Isaiah 43:1–2 NIV.

Insight: According to a recent study, nearly a 30% of South African adults have suffered a serious bout of depression in the past 12 months. This depression has a wide and profound impact. We’ve seen that depression can be the cause of lost wages; it can result in violence, anger, worry, and many other maladies.

Life Guide: Christians are not immune from depression. We can become depressed as we face problems. We all face challenges and trials, and we can become discouraged or depressed about the problems we face. We can feel defeated by sin and the mistakes we have made. We can be burdened by unsaved loved ones and oppressed by demonic attacks.

Challenge: But God has given us the power to be freed from this depression. He told Isaiah that we might go through waters, rivers, and fire, but He will be with us. He promised that we would not be swept over by the floods of life or burned.
If you feel overwhelmed by the weight of the world, turn your heart to God. Seek to be filled with the Spirit, remembering that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, and peace as in Galatians 5:22–23. As Isaiah reminds us, we belong to God. He can take away our fears and worries. Don’t bottle up your feelings. Confess your needs and problems to God. Then confess His promises. Trust Him. Remember, He has redeemed you.
Reflection Question: What’s weighing down your heart today?

Prayer: Almighty and Heavenly Father, thank You for being with me. Thank You for taking away any depression and giving me peace. In Jesus mighty name. Amen.

BE A LIGHT SEEKER AND AVOID ANY FORM OF DARKNESS!

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105.

Insight: We are not very comfortable with darkness. If you've ever been walking alone on a dark street, or come into the house when the day is spent and fumbled for the light switch, you know that you feel profoundly better when the light comes on.

Life Guide: As a child, I lived in a suburb that we sometimes found ourselves walking along at night after coming from church or our sport fields. It was a dirt road and the area was filled with wild grass and trees. I can remember praying for God to light my way home more than once. It's funny be cause it always seemed like the moon got ever so much brighter and I would reach our house in the floors township so much faster.

Challenge: The good news is that God always keeps the light on for us because He wants us to be sure of where we're going. He keeps us safely on the path and protects us from attacks. The truth is that when we in the light we are and always will be fearless, because God is the light brightening up our paths.

Prayer: Almighty and Heavenly Father, help us to walk in Your light today being sure of every step and breathing in the comfort that comes from knowing You're walking ahead of us to keep the path straight. In Jesus mighty name. Amen.
