1001.) Teaching: Do Not Worry - Trust in God
We live in a time where the world constantly gives us reasons to worry. Whether it’s about our health, finances, future, or even what we will eat or wear, worry seems to surround us. Yet, Jesus Himself tells us, “Do not worry.” In Matthew 6:25-34, He speaks directly to this common human experience of anxiety. Today, we will explore what it means to live free from worry by trusting in God.
Worry and Its Source
We all experience worry—it’s a natural emotion. But we must recognize that worry does not come from God. Worry stems from fear, uncertainty, and a lack of trust in God’s sovereignty. Our bodies often react to worry with stress, anxiety, and even physical illness. However, God is not the creator of worry—He is the giver of peace.
In Matthew 6:25-34 (ESV), Jesus teaches us:
> "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."
Here, Jesus is telling us not to let worldly concerns consume us. Our lives are about more than just what we will eat, drink, or wear. God, our Heavenly Father, is in control, and He knows exactly what we need. We must turn our attention away from worry and instead focus on Him.
The Kingdom of God and Our Trust in Him
What does it mean to seek the Kingdom of God first, as Jesus instructs in Matthew 6:33? It means making God the King over every aspect of our lives. It means realizing that God is sovereign and handing over our worries, concerns, and situations into His capable hands. When we seek His Kingdom first, we acknowledge His rule and trust His will.
God is aware of our needs and will provide for us in His perfect timing. When we trust in God rather than in our circumstances, we are set free from anxiety.
In Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV), Paul encourages us:
> "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
The key to overcoming anxiety is prayer and thanksgiving. When we lay our concerns at God’s feet and thank Him for His faithfulness, He fills our hearts with peace, a peace that transcends all human understanding.
Living in the Moment
One of the greatest lessons Jesus teaches about worry is that it robs us of living in the present. In Matthew 6:34, He says:
> “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
God calls us to live in the present, not in fear of what might happen in the future. We often waste precious time worrying about things we cannot control. Jesus uses the example of the birds in verse 26:
> “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
Jesus invites us to consider how carefree birds live, trusting in their Creator to provide. How much more, then, should we trust God to meet our needs?
Trusting God Over Our Circumstances
We were created for more than just surviving; we were created to thrive in relationship with God. As Christians, we have given our lives to Jesus, and our confidence must be in Him. When we put our trust in things like food, clothing, or pleasures, we miss out on the true purpose of life.
Jesus emphasizes in verse 27:
> “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
Worrying does not change anything. It does not add value to our lives but instead robs us of peace and joy. Jesus calls us to live with confidence in God’s provision. When we make God our priority, we will experience His care in every area of our lives.
The Remedy for Anxiety
The remedy for worry is found in a relationship with God. In Philippians 4:4-7, Paul reminds us:
> "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Paul, who wrote this while imprisoned, knew the power of trusting in God even in difficult situations. When we bring our worries to God, He responds with peace and assurance. As Christians, we must ask ourselves, “What is in my heart? What is in my mind?” Are we filling our hearts with the worries of this world, or are we resting in God’s promises?
Conclusion: Trust Jesus in Every Situation
Even in the most difficult circumstances, Jesus calls us to trust Him. As Paul found joy in the Lord while in prison, so we, too, can rejoice in God’s faithfulness, no matter what we face.
Jesus’ command is simple: Do not worry. Live in the moment, trust God for tomorrow, and let His peace guard your heart and mind. When we seek first the Kingdom of God, all our needs will be met, and we will experience the fullness of life in Christ.
Let’s put our confidence in Jesus Christ and trust Him with our whole lives, knowing that God is faithful to take care of everything we need.
