Without arguing whether tithing is law or required or whatever, here is some insight that works for me and others who have embraced tithing as a way of life.
Tithing is primarily taught as a spiritual principle in Scripture, but even outside the spiritual dimension, there are practical and social benefits that can flow from the habit of consistent giving. Here are some strong non-spiritual benefits you can build into a teaching or discussion:
1. Financial Discipline
1.1. Tithing forces a person to plan their money instead of spending impulsively.
If someone knows 10% is already allocated, they naturally learn budgeting, prioritisation, and controlled spending.
1.2. Creates a Habit of Saving and Allocation
People who tithe regularly often become better at separating money into categories:
(a) Giving
(b) Household needs
(c) Savings
(d) Investments
(e) Emergencies
That structure builds financial maturity.
2. Breaks Greed and Materialism
Money easily becomes an idol. Giving consistently weakens unhealthy attachment to wealth and possessions.
A person learns:
* “I can survive without consuming everything I earn.”
* “Money is a tool, not my master.”
3. Develops Self-Control
Tithing teaches delayed gratification.
Instead of spending immediately on luxuries, one learns restraint and intentional living.
4. Encourages Accountability
A disciplined giver usually becomes more aware of:
(a) Income
(b) Debt
(c) Wasteful expenditure
(d) Financial leakage
Many people do not actually know where their money goes until they begin structured giving.
5. Strengthens Community Institutions
Churches are not only worship centres. They often function as:
5.1. Feeding centres
5.2. Counselling centres
5.3. Funeral support systems
5.4. Youth development spaces
5.5. Community stabilisers
Consistent tithing helps these structures function effectively without constantly begging for money.
6. Supports Employment and Economic Activity
Healthy churches employ:
6.1. Musicians, Administrators, Cleaners, Security,
6.2. Media teams
6.3. Maintenance workers
Giving indirectly supports jobs and local economic circulation. The few people you pay, no matter how little, support families and stave off hunger.
7. Promotes Generosity and Social Responsibility:
7.1. Tithing trains people to think beyond themselves.
7.2. Societies become healthier when people contribute instead of only consuming.
8. Reduces Financial Chaos in Families
Households with financial structure often experience:
8.1. Fewer money fights
8.2. Better planning
8.3. Clearer priorities
8.4. More stability
Tithing can become part of an organised household financial culture.
9. Builds Long-Term Thinking
People who consistently give tend to think in terms of stewardship rather than survival alone.
Stewardship thinking often spills into:
* Investing
* Estate planning
* Insurance
* Education planning
* Retirement preparation
10. Encourages Ethical Earning
When people consciously dedicate part of income, they may become more sensitive about how that income is earned.
It can discourage dishonest gain, corruption, or exploitative business practices.
11. Creates Emotional Freedom Around Money
Some people live under constant fear of losing money. Regular giving can psychologically loosen anxiety and obsession around finances because the person learns not to cling desperately to every rand.
12. Helps Churches Avoid Manipulative Fundraising
When members tithe consistently, churches are less likely to resort to:
12.1. Endless emergency offerings
12.2. Emotional pressure tactics
12.3. Financial gimmicks
13. Stable support creates healthier ministry administration.
Builds Trust and Shared Ownership
People who contribute financially often feel more responsible for the wellbeing and direction of the institution they support.
This can increase volunteerism, care, and participation.
14. Teaches Children Financial Values
Children who grow up seeing structured giving often learn:
* Budgeting
* Generosity
* Responsibility
* Community-mindedness
Those lessons can positively shape adulthood.
If you still have a problem with tithing you may want to take this post and pray about it. Maybe you have also realised why Christian organisations don't have money to do anything. We can't even challenge the Halaal Trust that we support big time everyday, but we can hardly build resources to purchase land to go into farming to be self sufficient.
If you are comfortable to still debate tithing, I am not. I have better things to discuss with kingfon builders.
