June Theme: Gratitude

Count Your Blessings By Confidence Mokgatle

When I think about gratitude, the song “Count Your Blessings” by Johnson Oatman Jr. comes to mind. It is an invitation to name all the blessings in my life one at a time.
It is such a beautiful practice to learn as early as one can. I first heard the song at a holiday Bible club, and the tune always comes to mind when I think of being deeply thankful.

I recently observed that the older I get, the harder it is to count only the good things in my life that ought to make it onto my gratitude list. Sadly, life is packaged with both the good and the bad, and yet God commands us to be grateful whilst fully knowing our earthly circumstances.

This instruction is more than just optimism. I see it as a call to bravely and soberly name both the positive and the negative; the pleasant and the painful. A call to surrender through naming and relinquishing control. I now know that counting all my blessings will not produce the consistent and sustainable feeling of gratitude I desire, because a list alone has no power.

True gratitude is found in a person, and His name is Jesus Christ. He alone is the anchoring source for gratitude. We need to surrender both the good on the list and the bad we so desperately prefer not to experience to Him.

Only then can we “give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thessalonians 5:18a).

Book Review: Praying the Names of God by Ann Spangler in partnership with Cumbooks Stores

Reviewed by Pinky Hlophe

Praying the Names of God by Ann Spangler is a rich devotional resource that explores the many names and titles of God found throughout Scripture. Designed as a 52-week study, the book introduces one name each week, unpacking its meaning, biblical context, and relevance for believers today.

What makes this book particularly valuable is its depth. Rather than offering a quick devotional read, Spangler invites readers to slow down, meditate on Scripture, and develop a greater understanding of God's character.

Each study includes Scripture references, guided prayer, reflective questions, and journaling opportunities that encourage personal application and spiritual growth.

For me, this book has been an ongoing learning journey. It has deepened my appreciation for the significance of God's names and helped me approach Scripture with greater awe and reverence. The reflection questions are thoughtfully written and challenge readers to examine their hearts and grow in their relationship with God.

This is not a book to rush through. It requires time, focus, and a willingness to engage deeply with God's Word. However, the reward is a richer understanding of who God is and how He reveals Himself throughout the Bible.

I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to strengthen their devotional life and gain deeper insight into Scripture.

MAY THEME: GRACE

When Grace Speaks By Tapiwa Wenyika

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ… be with you all” (2 Corinthians 13:14). These closing words from Paul were not ordinary greetings but a reminder of the sustaining power of God.

Throughout the book of Corinthians, Paul gave strong correction, instruction, and admonition to the church. Yet he concluded by pointing them back to grace, the enabling power of God to fulfill His will and accomplish what He has spoken.

Earlier, in 2 Corinthians 12:8–9, Paul recounts pleading with the Lord concerning his affliction, only to receive the answer: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” In moments of limitation, weakness, and inability, God does not abandon us; instead, He supplies the strength necessary to endure, obey, and continue. Grace is not merely comfort; it is supernatural empowerment.

This same grace is echoed in Zechariah 4:7: “Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabe, l you shall become a plain!” The mountain standing before him would not be removed by human effort alone, but by the Spirit of God. The declaration was, “Grace, grace to it!”

What stood as an impediment would bow before God’s enabling power.

As we conclude this month, may our posture remain one of faith and dependence on Him. Whatever mountain, resistance, or weakness stands before you, stand firm and declare: “Grace, grace to it,” trusting fully in the sufficiency of Christ.

Grace Over Labels Lusanda Dhlamini

One of my daughters recently received a sports participation certificate, and one of the descriptions written about her was “chatterbox.”

I know it came from a light-hearted place, but it immediately took me back to my own primary school days. My reports would often read: “Excellent marks, but too talkative in class.”

It was true!

Eventually, I was moved to the front row to help me stay focused and avoid distractions. Even in high school, I intentionally chose to sit in the first or second row. Even now, at church and seminars, I choose to sit in the front row.

This moment reminded me how easily the world — and ultimately the enemy, satan — tries to label us. John 10:10 tells us that the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy.

Once we accept and “wear” negative labels, he keeps adding more until they begin to shape our identity and pull us into a pit.

But Jesus, through His grace, is able and willing to remove every false label. His desire is for us to live abundantly.

The Bible is filled with women whose labels were changed by God’s grace:
• Rahab was known as “the prostitute,” yet she became part of the lineage of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).
• Mary Magdalene was known for being demon-possessed, yet she became one of the first witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection and helped support His ministry (Luke 8:1–3).

You cannot remove the enemy’s labels through self-help alone. You need the power, grace, and truth of Jesus Christ to exchange them for His identity over your life.

Grace is a Person By Pastor Mylene Evangelista

Grace saw me when I was lost, wandering in darkness, crying out for help. Grace saw me and came down. Grace came down to demonstrate how powerfully and beautifully loved I was. No questions asked. No interview to determine whether I was worthy. Grace saw, and grace came. Grace saved me, picked me up, and put me in a place where I knew I would never be alone.

And grace still sees.

Grace sees my journey, my ups and downs, my victories, my tears, my meltdowns, my joy…Grace sees everything, and grace still comes. Grace still comes to embrace, to encourage, to teach, to give hope, to remind me of who I am in Christ.

If not for grace, where would I be? Still lost, still wandering, still in darkness. But now, grace has set me free.

Romans 5:2B MSG
We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand—out in the wide open spaces of God’s grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise.

It’s still a journey, but this, there is safety and security and a peace that passes all understanding. Because of grace, I can stand and live life to the fullest no matter what happens - not in my own strength but in the One who holds my life together, in the One who loves me the most.

For to me, grace is not a concept. Grace is a person. And His name is Jesus.

GRACE EMPOWERS BY ZELDA CRONJE

Titus 2:11-15
I have known God all my life.
Even though I didn’t grow up in church or in a believing home, I can look back now and see that I was never alone. Even as a child, I sensed His presence with me, I felt protected. Looking back, I now know it was Jesus - always knocking, always waiting, never losing hope.

In 1981, at the age of 20, I gave my heart to Jesus, and in that moment, something irreversible happened within me.

Ephesians 2:8 says: “For by grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God.”

His saving grace became real to me. I walked out knowing my life could no longer remain the same - not from any pressure, but because of His power within. I could no longer live the same way or continue in old habits, no one had to tell me that my old life was futile. My behaviour, thoughts, and even my language shifted. The things I once accepted were no longer acceptable. This wasn’t condemnation it was evidence of His empowering grace!

His grace didn’t expose me to guilt and sham. Instead, He covered me in love, and my past was not something to escape, but something He was healing.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead was now alive in me and bringing life where there was death.

Grace is not licence - grace is power. His power within transforming.... so that what God has done in me begins to flow through me.

Leading with Grace by Fadzi Whande

In the Kingdom of God, leadership is not sustained by strength alone it is sustained by grace.

So often, we think leadership is about having all the answers, always being strong, or never making mistakes. But throughout Scripture, we see that God uses imperfect people and sustains them through His grace.

Moses wrestled with insecurity.
Esther was an orphan raised in obscurity.
Peter failed publicly.
Yet grace met each of them, and grace carried them into purpose.

The truth is that leadership can be heavy. It stretches us, humbles us, and reveals our limitations. But grace reminds us that we were never meant to lead in our own strength.

Scripture says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

God’s grace not only covers us, it strengthens us, refines us, and teaches us how to lead with humility and compassion.

As leaders, we are also called to extend grace to others. In a world that often leads through pressure, criticism, and performance, God invites us to lead differently with kindness, wisdom, patience, and love.

Grace filled leadership does not ignore excellence or truth, but it understands that people grow best where there is both accountability and compassion.

So, if leadership feels heavy in this season, don’t carry it alone. Lean into the grace of God.

Because the strongest leaders are not those who never struggle but those who know how deeply they need His grace.

MAY THEME: GRACE

Grace – Simple and Profound By Renee van der Walt

2 Corinthians 12:9 – “My grace is sufficient for you.”

The word “grace” is often used so casually among Christians and non-Christians alike, yet it carries profound meaning. It is one of the most beautiful and powerful realities we can experience. You need it—you can not live without it—but you can not buy it or earn it.

Grace is a gift. When you receive it, you realise how deeply you needed it all along. And, you can only extend grace to others once you have received it yourself because you can not give what you do not have.

Grace reaches you exactly where you are and carries you to where God is calling you to be. It does what nothing else can do—it transforms you at the core of who you are: your heart. It empowers you to live out your calling, even when you feel unable in your own strength.

There are two extremes when it comes to grace: abusing it by living as you please, or striving to earn what has already been freely given. But grace is neither.

Grace is freedom—the freedom to live fully in what God has for you. It teaches, shapes, and leads you into truth, bringing peace, purpose, and lasting transformation in everyday life.

Ephesians 2:8 – “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… it is the gift of God.”
“Grace is not opposed to effort. It is opposed to earning.”

Lord , thank you for this gift.

Blessings
