Sound Counsel
A few weeks ago a friend called to get a reference on a preacher I do not know. I told him I know the man from a distance but know zero about his ministry. That was the end of the conversation.
It is so important to give a honest reference or no reference at all. Sadly we like to run our mouth on people we know very little about, here are some simple guidelines next time you get a call:
1. If you don't know the person don't say things about the person you did not experience for yourself, say nothing.
2. If you have not heard the person teach in 2 years your assessment on his teachings might be out. Don't speak about outdated things, try and get a more recent version of the person before you speak.
3. If it is personal difference don't generalise it,your experience with the person might just be limited to you.
4. Differentiate between a summary on the persons ministry and the individuals personality. Stop saying "He is good on the word but he is not friendly". They are looking for a subject matter expert not a friend.
5. Be pure when giving feedback and stop auditioning for the slot when you give your summary/breakdown
6. It is not a crime to say "I dont know".
7. If you dishonored the person don't tell the entire world that the person was upset with you but you don't give all the details. Sometimes people are not Divas, they just called you to order for the bad treatment you gave them.
8. Be genuine.
9. Stop trying to protect territory. It is ok for people to use others, they don't owe you a platform. Stop monopolizing platforms through bad feedback.
Preachers we got to repent like for real. The damage we do to one another with our false references... We must do better.
You don't have to like someone to speak the truth about them.
