Firewood
If we never choose to plug into the vine or accept Jesus as our Savior, then the Bible tells us that we’re like branches that are dead, thrown into the fire, and burned. Think about building a campfire: You walk around the woods looking for dead dry branches, because they’ll burn up easily and keep the fire going. This is the same analogy Jesus uses when referring to people who never experience new life in Christ. They’re spiritually dead, having no connection to the true source of life. Just like dead, brittle, dry branches, they have no potential for growth or life in them. This is a hard truth, but it’s the truth of God’s Word. We must connect to Jesus by inviting His Spirit to come into our lives, save us from our sins, and bring us new life in Christ.
The analogy of dead branches can also apply to areas of our lives that aren’t producing good fruit. Once we’re connected to Jesus and have life in Him, He prunes areas of our lives that are unproductive and weigh us down in our spiritual walk. For example, if there’s an area that continually causes you to stumble, God will cut that branch off to free you in that area. Jesus is always pruning branches in my life that are sinful or unfruitful. He has our freedom in mind. As we do life with Jesus, He’ll cast off areas in our lives that are better used for firewood.

Bloom Where You're Planted
I love the visual picture in John 15:1. Jesus is the vine. God the Father is the gardener. The fruits produced by the vine are the result of the inward working of the Holy Spirit and we as believers are the branches. It’s a clear picture of all the roles at play. The gardener, God the Father, plants believers all over the world. He has deliberately planted you and me right where we are. He wants our branches to reach people for Him.
I’m not just referring to people in ministry, but to believers in every field, occupation, and city around the globe. As we’re connected to Jesus, we’ll carry the influence of Christ to our workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, and communities. The work of the Holy Spirit helps us accomplish God’s purposes in our lives, no matter where God places us. You’re not here by accident. You have a divine calling on your life and your life is meant to make an eternal difference. Look around and see the hurting, broken, or lost in your life. Pray that God will give you influence and divine appointments with them.
Our job as believers is to stay connected to the vine and to trust God as He leads us and prompts us to bring His love and hope to our world. We are blessed to be a blessing. As we stay connected to Jesus, the vine, we’ll represent the love of Christ to every person in our paths and our branches will reach the world one community at a time. Let’s bloom where God has planted us.

Come messy.

When we fumble due to sin—and it’s gonna happen—confession puts us back on the field. - Lou Holtz

We desperately want to come to God when we feel like we have it all together. But, God wants us to come to Him in the middle of our turbulence. We do not have to clean up our act to impress Him.

We do, however, need to talk about the condition of our hearts with Him. Part of prayer is confessing the wrong things we’ve said, done and yes, even thought. C.S. Lewis says that confession is like the threshold of prayer. Meaning, we do it first.

Confession is hard for us because we don’t want to admit our flaws. News flash: He already knows. He knows the things we try to hide from Him. That thing we did years ago that we swear we’ll take to our grave? He knows. And guess what? He loves us anyway.

Even though He knows, we still need to confess our sins. It’s actually something that most of us either don’t want to do or don’t feel is necessary. And we certainly don’t want to call ourselves sinful. That would mean we are full of sin. Another news flash: we are sinful. But the Bible is crystal clear that “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” How much will we be cleansed of? Everything.

When we confess our sins, we then make the choice to repent. That means that we do an “about face” and literally turn the opposite way from the sin we just confessed. Confessing our sin and walking in repentance might include this simple prayer. “God, please forgive me for gossiping about Beth today. I will choose to speak words that don’t tear other people down from now on.”

But there are times where we come to Him and we have much more to confess. There may be years of moral discrepancies that weigh us down. Some things we don’t remember specifically. If that’s the case, our prayer could be, “God, I know I have sinned so much, and I don’t remember it all. Would you please forgive me where I have messed up?” And guess what? The Bible tells us that He will remember our sins no more and that they are removed from us as far as the east is from the west.

We may think that we are hopeless and our circumstance is helpless. Guess what? Hopeless and helpless are God’s specialty. We just need to bring our messy lives to Him.
