Do you know someone whose words feel like stones instead of seeds? Every sentence sharp. Every correction cutting. Every truth delivered without tenderness. And maybe… if we are honest before God… sometimes that someone is us.
We live in a world that confuses harshness with honesty. As if volume equals authority. As if bluntness equals boldness. As if cruelty wrapped in “I’m just telling the truth” makes it holy. But Truth has a Name. And His Name is Jesus Christ.
When Jesus Christ spoke truth, sinners did not run from Him... they ran to Him. The woman caught in adultery did not hear condemnation in His voice; she heard dignity. Peter, after denying Him, was not crushed with shame; he was restored with love. Even correction from His lips carried compassion.
Truth does not have to be harsh. Light does not need to burn to be bright. Harsh words may win arguments, but they lose hearts. Sharp tongues may prove a point, but they rarely produce repentance. Because real transformation grows in the soil of love. The question is not, “Is it true?” The question is, “Does it sound like Him?”
We forget that we are not called merely to speak facts, we are called to reflect Christ. And Christ is both Lion and Lamb. Bold and gentle. Holy and kind. Sometimes the most powerful truth is the one whispered with tears instead of shouted with pride. If the Holy Spirit convicts, He does it with purpose. If the Father corrects, He does it as a loving Parent. If we speak truth without love, we misrepresent the One who is Truth.
Before we release words, may we ask: Will this heal or harm? Will this draw them closer to God or push them further away? Is my tone carrying grace? Because one day, we will stand before the One who knows every idle word. And I pray our words will testify that we learned His heart.
You can be honest without being harsh. You can correct without crushing. You can speak truth and still sound like Heaven 🤍
