✨ The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ | Sermon Recap ✨
Theme: Formed and Filled by the Living Bread
This Sunday, Fr Russell reflected on the mystery at the heart of our Catholic faith: Jesus Christ truly present in the Eucharist.
Beginning with the recent attack on the Blessed Sacrament altar at Holy Trinity, he reminded us why Catholics hold the Eucharist so sacred. The Eucharist is not merely a symbol. It is Christ Himself, the Living Bread who nourishes, forms, and sends us.
🍞 1. We Become Part of Him
Drawing on St Thomas Aquinas, Fr Russell reminded us that there are two ways of eating.
Usually, we eat food and it becomes part of us.
But in the Eucharist something extraordinary happens: we receive Christ, and we become part of Him.
The Eucharist shapes our identity. We are formed by the One whom we receive.
✨ 2. United in Christ
St Thomas teaches that the Eucharist unites us with Christ.
When we gather around the one bread and the one cup, Christ does not become fragmented in us. Rather, we become united in Him.
People of different cultures, languages, races, backgrounds, and experiences gather around the same table and are drawn into one life: the life of Christ.
🕊️ 3. Filled with Grace
The Eucharist strengthens and preserves God's grace within us.
As we receive Christ, His life continues to work in us, helping us to choose what is good and to become more fully who God calls us to be.
The Eucharist is not simply nourishment for a moment; it is God's ongoing action in our lives.
🔥 4. Truth, Mercy, and Mission
Fr Russell reflected on three further gifts of the Eucharist.
First, we are drawn into truth because Christ is Truth.
Second, we receive mercy as we acknowledge where we have fallen short.
Third, we are sent on mission to bring Christ's truth and mercy into the world.
The Eucharist never leaves us unchanged.
🤲 5. Becoming His Mind, Heart, and Hands
At the heart of Holy Trinity's vision is the Eucharist.
When we hear the words "The Body of Christ" and respond "Amen," we are accepting more than a doctrine. We are accepting a mission.
Christ comes to dwell within us so that we may become His mind, His heart, and His hands in the world.
💭 Reflection:
When I come forward to receive the Eucharist, do I realise whom I am receiving?
And how is Christ calling me to make His self-sacrificing love visible in my daily life?
The Eucharist is not only something we receive.
It is something we become.
