✝️ Why are Crosses and Images Covered from the 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT?

As we enter the 5th Sunday of Lent, you will notice something striking in Catholic churches: crosses and sacred images are veiled.

This beautiful tradition is a deeply meaningful liturgical practice that helps us enter more fully into the mystery of Christ’s Passion.

Here’s what it means:
🔹 A time of deeper focus:
The Church moves into a more intense period of Lent, traditionally called Passiontide, where our attention turns strongly to the suffering of Christ.

🔹 A sign of Christ “hiding Himself”:
From the 5th Sunday we shall begin to read from several Gospel where Jesus withdraws and hides before His Passion. The veiling reflects this moment; reminding us of His quiet movement toward the Cross.

🔹 A spiritual “fast” from beauty:
Just as we fast from food, the Church invites us to fast from visual richness; helping us focus inward and prepare our hearts.

🔹 Building anticipation:
The crosses will be unveiled on Good Friday, and images return fully at Easter. This makes the joy of the Resurrection even more powerful.

🔹 A call to reflection
The absence makes us notice more. It draws us into deeper meditation on:
• The sacrifice of Christ
• The reality of sin
• The gift of redemption

This sacred silence in our churches speaks loudly; inviting us to walk closely with Christ in these final days before Easter.

Good afternoon
I hope you are all well.

Just a kind request to please encourage your children to participate in the Passion of Christ Play, if you approve and if they are interested.

Practice will take place this Saturday at 9:00am - 12pm in Extension 8 at St Catherine's ofSienna (in the church). We will be practicing for 7 Saturdays, and the Passion Play will be performed on Good Friday morning.
