St. Albans Liberal Catholic Church

St. Albans Liberal Catholic Church A Liberal Catholic Church in Johannesburg, South Africa: traditional sacraments & freedom to think.

The Liberal Catholic Church exists to forward Christ's work in the world. We are liberal in that acceptance of our teachings and doctrine is not obligatory. We are Catholic in the sense of being all-embracing, and also because we have the historic Church as the source of our Holy Orders and of our sacramental tradition. We combine Catholic forms of worship - stately ritual, deep mysticism and witn

ess to the reality of sacramental grace - with the widest measure of intellectual liberty, and respect for the individual conscience.

10th Sunday after Trinity: Devotion

On 22nd of August, our church turned 103 years old, and so, during the mass, our bishop rededicated our church in the faith of our mission, in the hope of its continued life, and in charity of its service to the community. We are still here, 103 years later, the oldest continually-operating Liberal Catholic Church in the world.

After mass, Bishop Kagisho gave us a talk entitled "African Spirituality".

8th Sunday after Trinity: Wisdom

During the sermon, the life of Mrs Simon, recently departed, was celebrated. At 99 years of age, she was the oldest member of our congregation and last attended Easter mass this year. We thank her for all her years of service, and fittingly, her accumulated wisdom. Requiescat in pace.

During the Winter holidays, some of our youth group offered their time in devotional service to the church. Faith, hope and charity are the three highest virtues, and flow one into the other.

Faith in God stills the restlessness of the soul, bringing inner peace.

Inner peace begets Hope, which ameliorates despair and justifies action.

Action, when in service, is Charity, which is the greatest of all virtues.

4th Sunday after Trinity: God as Love

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me... If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love... This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you."

3rd Sunday after Trinity: God as Ruler of Angels

Angels are messengers of God, our brethren who never fell. They work tirelessly to vouchsafe our return to the Shining Realms and the promised beatific vision.

"I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels, which present the prayers of the saints, and which go in and out before the glory of the Holy One."

St Albans Day and Sunday in the Octave of Corpus Christi

While our patronal feast took precendance in honour, Bishop Kagisho consecrated the holy oils in the presence of the blessed sacrament for the first time and charged the clergy to keep them safe.

After tea, Reverend Brendan gave his annual midwinter talk entitled "Wheel of the Weeks", dealing with the origins of our calendar, timekeeping, and the sacred geometry particular to Liberal Catholic churches.
