Rest in peace Neil Sedaka BDE

Neil Sedaka has passed away at 86.

Born in Brooklyn to a Lebanese-Jewish father and an Ashkenazi Jewish mother, Sedaka grew up in Brighton Beach — classically trained at Juilliard before becoming one of the defining voices of American pop.

He wrote or co-wrote more than 500 songs.

“Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.”
“Calendar Girl.”
“Laughter in the Rain.”
“Bad Blood.”

And hits for others — from Connie Francis to Captain & Tennille.

He was part of the Brill Building generation that helped shape modern pop music — Jewish songwriters who turned melody into memory and heartbreak into harmony.

Long before streaming.
Long before algorithms.
Just piano, pen, and instinct.

From a taxi driver’s son in Brooklyn to a global stage, his music outlived trends, invasions, and decades.

May his memory be a blessing.

Shabbat Shalom 🕯️💫

This week in Parashat T’rumah, we witness something extraordinary. Not a thunderclap revelation, not a sea splitting, not plagues or pillars of fire. Instead, something quieter and perhaps more daring:

Wishing you all a peaceful and joyful weekend.

Dear Congregants and Friends,

Bereavement Notice & Funeral Details

It is with much sadness that we advise the passing of our member, Dr. Jane Starfield, who passed away yesterday after a brave journey with illness, and then, most recently, a hip replacement after a bad fall in February this year. Jane put up a strong fight and always had a kind word to say to everyone, well wishes for all, and more love in her heart than most. She will be incredibly missed in our little community.

Jane's sisters, Penny and Sue, are traveling from abroad to Johannesburg as we speak. The funeral will take place on Thursday, 4 December at 12pm at West Park Jewish Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi Rogerio Cukierman from our sister synagogue, Bet David. All are invited to support the family and to help make up a minyan.

Our heartfelt condolences to Jane's family, friends and loved ones. May the Almighty bring comfort to them in the days ahead and may Jane's memory be for a blessing. Baruch Dayan HaEmet.

Sincerely,
Rabbi Julia Margolis, Chair Sheena Kretzmer, Vice-Chair Michelle Goodman, Care Committee Lead Lou-Ann Theunissen, and on behalf of the entire Beit Luria Management and Community.

💫 Shabbat Shalom and have a beautiful weekend! 🌿💖

As the week draws to a close and the hum of our days begins to soften, I find myself reflecting on the quiet music that has filled our classrooms and hearts. For me, music has never been just rhythm and melody — it is the pulse of connection, the language of care, and the heartbeat of community.
