The Power of Accountability
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV):
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”
One morning on my way to work, I found myself caught behind a slow-moving car. I started feeling a bit frustrated, as we often do when we’re in a rush. It’s interesting how, when we feel pressed for time, we expect everything and everyone around us to move at our pace. But as I looked around, I noticed something that made me pause: not only was the car in front of me going slowly, but the car next to me was keeping pace with me too. I couldn’t overtake.
In that moment, I felt like the Holy Spirit was speaking to me.
It made me think about accountability, something we underestimate in our walk with God. Those cars around me were, in a way, holding me accountable. The one in front slowed me down, and the one beside me kept me from speeding ahead recklessly. Though it felt inconvenient, it was actually keeping me safe. It was a reminder that boundaries, pace, and patience are part of the journey, and that we’re not meant to travel alone.
Like on the road, life comes with speed limits, detours, and moments where we’re forced to slow down. In those moments, God places people in our lives, accountability partners, friends, mentors, brothers and sisters in Christ, not to frustrate us, but to help keep us in our lane and aligned with His purpose.
Being held accountable teaches us patience, an essential fruit of the Spirit. It humbles us, reminds us that we’re not in control of everything, and that sometimes, the delays we face are actually God’s way of protecting us.
We were never meant to walk this road alone. God, in His wisdom, designed us for community. For relationship. Accountability is one of the beautiful ways that community reflects His love, helping us avoid crashes, slow down when needed, and stay on the straight and narrow path.
So even when it feels like you’re being “held back,” trust that God may be using the people around you to guide, protect, and lovingly remind you: this isn’t a race to run alone.
