Heritage Day on 24 September

Again it was a pleasure to recognise and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation as the Youth. South African Youths in KZN, Durban Diocese celebrated the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of the Diocese at St. Mary's Parish. Various events were staged throughout the day to commemorate this day.

Living heritage is the foundation of all communities and an essential source of identity and continuity. Aspects of living heritage include: cultural tradition, oral history, performance, skills and techniques, and social relationships.

Living heritage plays an important role in promoting cultural diversity, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace and economic development among the Youths. In every community there are living human treasures who possess a high degree of knowledge, skills and history pertaining to different aspects of diverse living heritage. It is therefore important for the Youths to reclaim, restore and preserve these various aspects of living heritage to accelerate the use of living heritage to address challenges communities are facing today.

Dreams
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Let's keep our dreams alive

We have to-morrow
Bright before us
Like a flame

Yesterday, a night-gone thing
A sun-down name

And dawn to-day
Broad arch above the road we came,
We march. We live our best now, and God blesses the rest

We are the youths and the youth is us

Our society constitutes of different individuals carrying various wounds. Some are emotionally burdened, some are psychologically drained. Some are financially unstable, some are spiritually empty. It needs more empathy, it needs more care. It needs more love and tenderness, it needs more kind people. Imploring the words of our founder St Eugene, we ought to be humans first before Christians. Being humans requires a certain amount of consideration of the next person, it needs availability of oneself to the the other and it ultimately needs more consideration of the others in need. Therefore let us be kind enough to acknowledge the humanness of others and be Christian enough to love others. Only then can we become Christ-like in our various vocations.

We had an Opportunity to meet and Spend time with the Youth at Hammarsdale Yesterday the 11th September 2022, this made us realise once again how proud we are of all our young people who so obviously want to learn, take part and make a difference in their lives and their communities.

Seeing them in the workshop in particular, sharing their ideas and experiences, was particularly enjoyable and everyone had a positive contribution to make to the various topics which included Youth Unemployment and Business initiatives, Depression and ways to avoid Depression, peer pressure, relationships and teens pregnancy – things that are important for all of us to talk about.

Events like these take so much work to organise and I would like to thank everyone involved for putting them together, especially our Young 4 Life Executive who, along with the Vibrant Hammarsdale Community team, made them run so smoothly and successfully.

All of the topics and activities that were chosen for the different age groups were directly relevant to young people who showed up which made it so much easier for everyone to get involved. I hope you enjoy reading this report and that it gives you a real sense of the enthusiasm and enjoyment that our young people displayed over
conferences.
