Pastor Christian Straeuli

The Lutheran Church Greytown is a family oriented congregation that seeks to connect people to Christ and to each other. You won’t find a lot of glitz and glitter here, just real people who come together to worship the Triune God, learn from the Scriptures, receive the sacraments, serve our community, and enjoy one another’s company while bearing each other’s burdens. We don’t always do any of tha

t perfectly, but we know that with the Bible as our light and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we live in God’s grace. We take our mission and faith seriously but we also have a lot of fun. Fundamentally, we exist to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world condemned in sin and to speak Good News to all people.

Luke 17:17-19
“Then Jesus answered…‘Was no
one found to return and give praise
to God except this foreigner?’ And
he said to him, ‘Rise and go your
way; your faith has made you
well.’”
Faith and thanksgiving go together. How could they not go together?
Our Lord gave Himself for us and
we trust Him and His every Word.
Once we have this faith, we want to say thank you — it’s only natural.
Thus, our stewardship is a natural
part of the Christian faith. We thank the Lord with our gifts which
enable the church to reach more
people with the Good News of
Christ.

Luke 10:25 – “And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’”

That’s just not a good question! Doing and inheriting just don’t go together.
What can you do to inherit the Rockefeller fortune? Nothing.
Inheriting is about birthright; doing is about merit. We receive eternal life by birthright in our Baptism into Christ. All of our doing in the kingdom of God flows from this, from who we are by our new birth. It can never be the other way around.

Luke 18:11–12
“The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’”
The Pharisees got so much right, and so much wrong. It’s a good thing for this Pharisee to be faithful to his wife and faithful in his giving to the Lord’s work, but these things are worthless if they proceed from a prideful heart! After all, what do we have to be proud of? If we have followed the Lord’s ways, we have only done our duty. Better to be thankful that the Lord has blessed us by making our giving part of His work!

The first Lutheran Church meat sale was held in 1975, selling boerewors, patties and other traditional German meats such as Mettwurst, Blutwurst, Leberwurst and brawn. Preserves, bread, rusks, Butterkuchen and other home baked goods and embroidery, dolls, and clothing.
The congregation would slaughter up to 19 head of cattle on surrounding farms in preparation of the meat sale.
All meat processing was done by the congregation in the weeks leading up to the event.
Slaughtering, mincing, mixing and making sausages, smoking of meat, packing and freezing, was all done by the congregation in order to raise funds to build their own church.
This tradition has been passed on from one generation to another and it still continues today.
It is still a highlight on the Umvoti calendar and continues to raise funds for the congregation.
Make sure to get down to the Lutheran Church from 9am on Saturday, August 1.

Matthew 13:45–46 – “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”
Indeed, Jesus redeemed us, purchased us back from sin and death, with all that He had. We belong to Him now. Our generosity ought to imitate the out-sized generosity of Jesus.

Luke 5:5
“And Simon answered, ‘Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.’”
All our toil, all our work, all our efforts mean nothing without the Lord’s guidance. But if we walk in the Word of Jesus...Well, look what happened to Simon Peter! The Lord gives grace, and He promises to bless our efforts and bring forth further blessings that we never expected.

Romans 8:18 – “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

It is very easy to get caught up in the present and lose track of our ultimate destiny in the kingdom of God.
St. Paul encourages us to keep eternity in mind. This certainly applies to our support for the Gospel — if we keep our focus on “the glory to be revealed” we will see our tithes and offerings in a new light.
