The Bond between Baptism and Discipleship
When the church baptizes a new convert with water, it does so in obedience to the Great Commission of Christ. The church baptizes with a view to discipleship: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matt. 28:19-20).
Acts 8: 37-40 Ethiopian Eu**ch
And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eu**ch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eu**ch, and he baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eu**ch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.
Acts 9:18 Paul’s Baptism
And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized;
Baptism is a public testimony of the act of faith. It is the initial act of discipleship. In fact, it can be argued that by delaying baptism, we are causing people to be disobedient to Scripture and thereby potentially hindering discipleship. Repent, believe and be baptized.
