THE GATE REMOTE By Johan Terblanche

Our main gate remote controll has four buttons, but only one opens the gate. It is only the red button that opens the gate. No matter how hard you press on any of the others, the gate will remain close and we will not be able to enter.

In recent times, I have heard a lot of people saying that there is more than one way to get to God. Some reckon that all roads lead to God so it does not matter which religion you follow, you will eventually get to God. Then there are those who think that by doing good works, they can enter into Heaven and be with God.
But the Word of God (Bible) tells us that there is only one way to get to God or to enter into eternal life with God in Heaven. Just like the red button on the remote is the only way to open the gate, Jesus Christ is the only way to get to God or to enter heavens gateway.

In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus also said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:9) Luke also wrote that there is no other name but the name of Jesus whereby we must be saved. (See Acts 4:12)

If we wish to spend all eternity with God in Heaven, let us therefore not run around looking for another Saviour and in doing so waste our time and energy. Let us press the right (the red) button to open the gate. Let us call upon Jesus who is able to save, deliver and heal.

But how do we press the red or the right button? How do we enter God’s kingdom through Jesus?

• We need to believe that Jesus came to save the lost, that He died upon the cross so we may become children of God with access to God.
• Then we must repent of our sins or in other words, admit with real regret that we have sinned.
• After that we must invite and welcome Jesus Christ into our lives.

Once we have done that, we can be called children of God according to John 1:12 and enter the gate.

WAITING By Johan Terblanche

At home we have three dogs. Whenever I sit down to eat one or more of them will sit down in front of me, hoping that I will give them something to eat.

I have learned a few lessons from our dogs waiting for food which can also be applied to our spiritual lives.

Our dogs knows where their food will come from and they trust us to give them food. Just so, we can trust the Lord to answer our prayers or to supply in our needs. The Psalmist says, “My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1) David also said that his soul find rest in the Lord from whom his hope comes. (Psalm 62:5)

Normally our dogs wait patiently. They don’t jump up and down but sit down. In Psalm 37: 7 we are taught to rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him. There is no need to for us to get upset or to jump up and down. When we wait patiently, we will receive from the Lord.

The dog gets better food if it waits. The dog can leave me and go scavage in the back yard, but there it will only get old food. When we are prepared to wait on the Lord, we also get the better portion. The Bible tells us that the Lord is good to those whose hope is in him.” (Lamentations 3:25)

But what can we do while we wait?

• We can stop complaining or be still. Psalm 46:11 tells us to be still and know that He is God.
• We can give God praise for all He has done before. Psalm 106:1 tells us to give praise or to give thanks unto the Lord for He is good.
• We can pray for the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (See James 5:16)

There is a saying, “Good things come to him that waits” Let us therefor wait patiently and see what the Lord will do for us.

DON’T GIVE UP By Johan Terblanche

Wednesday evening, I listened to the story of a young girl who wanted to grow her own beans. Firstly, she prepared the soil and added fertilizer to it. Then she planted the seed. After she planted the seed, she had to wait for it to come up. This took longer than expected and she almost got discouraged.

Then, shortly after the little plants came up, insects started eating the plants. A friendly neighbour then came around and gave her some marigold plants to plant in between the beans as this would keep the insects away.

Another neighbour then came around and saw the beanstalks laying on the ground. He then told the girl that the stalks need a pole to support it. After the neighbour left the girl was sitting in despair, thinking that it was a bad idea to grow her own beans.

The neighbour then returned with some reeds and helped the girl to stick it into the ground so the beans can climb up against it.
The girl regularly watered the plants and a few weeks later she harvested enough beans to make the bean stew she loved so much.

Like the girl growing beans we often face difficulties in life. We often give up or feel like abolishing our plans. But today, I want to encourage you not to give up.

In Luke 18:1 Jesus tells us to pray and not lose heart (get discouraged). Paul tells us to forget what lies behind us, strain forward to what lies ahead, and press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14) We must also remember that we can do all things through Him (Jesus Christ) who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13)

Instead of giving up. We must give over to the Lord. We must pray and allow Him to help us. Then the Lord will renew our strength and help us, even by sending someone over to assist. Never give up. Pray and allow Jesus to help you whenever you are in need.

BREATHING By Johan Terblanche

Breath in, breath out, breath in, breath out. Isn’t it wonderful to be able to breath? A while ago, I had bronchitis and because of the illness I battled to breath, especially when laying down. Not being able to properly breathe, showed me the importance of breathing.
Our bodies constantly need or require oxygen. The way we get oxygen is by inhaling air. We pull air into our lungs through our nose or mouth. The air we inhale is a mixture of different gasses. This air is then filtered in our lungs, and the oxygen is absorbed into our bloodstreams. At the same time carbon dioxide filters out from our blood into our lungs and are then exhaled through our noses or mouths.

In life we are also exposed to various things. Like the air we breathe which contains various gases we face different events or happenings, some good and others not. When confronted with these things we need to absorb what is good and useful and expel or breathe out the filth.

But how do we know what we should keep or cherish and what we must expel?

We should use God’s handbook, the Bible as a filter. In scripture it is clear to see what we should allow in our life’s. Like oxygen we need to have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23).

At the same time, we should not be involved in immoral, filthy, and indecent actions. We should not worship idols. We should not fight, become jealous, angry, and ambitious. We should not become envious, get drunk and does other things like these. (Galatians 5: 19-21). These things we need to “breathe out”, or get out of our life’s as it will make us sick.

Breathe in love, breath out hatred. Breathe in goodness, breath out selfishness. Breathe in peace, breathe out anger. Breathe in self-control, breath out intolerance. But how do we do this? We cannot do it on our own; we need the help of Jesus Christ. If we have Jesus in us, it will be as if His breaths in life and breathes out death and we will have life and life eternal in Him.

RED, YELLOW AND BLUE By Johan Terblanche

Back in 1984, Volkswagen South Africa, introduced the Volkswagen Golf 2. Instead of terminating the first Golf, they decided to rebrand it and sell it as the Volkswagen Citi Golf. The City Golf was launched and marketed as a more affordable alternative to younger people. Initially the City Golf was available in three colours only; red, yellow and blue.

The City Golf was manufactured from 1984 to 2009. Over its lifespan of 25 years more than 377 000 were built and sold. While a City Golf cost around 7 630 South African Rands in 1984, a late model City Golf in pristine condition was recently advertised for a staggering one million South African Rands.

There are a few lessons to be learned from the City Golf. The first Citi Golfs were essentially the same except for their colours. Just so we human beings are essentially the same though our appearance may differ. We are all souls, in need of a Saviour, captured in a body. And though our bodily appearances may vastly differ in terms of complexion and build we all need Jesus Christ.

Jesus does not judge on appearance. He sees on the inside. He knows what is going on inside of us. He does not see an ugly boy, a cripple girl or a badly clothed teenager. He does not see white, black or coloured. Jesus sees someone worth laying down His life for. (See John 3:16 and John 15:13)

God sees the plan or the purpose He has for you. He does not see a boy with a slingshot; He sees a conqueror of giants. (1 Samuel 17:50-51) He does not see a boy in a well, He sees a king. (Genesis 37:23-24) He does not see a baby drifting away in a basket, He sees a leader. (Exodus 2:1-10) God sees deeper than skin-deep. He sees the potential we have, whether we are red, yellow or blue.

Another lesson to be learned is that the City Golf was manufactured for a limited period only. It was first manufactured in 1984, but production ended in 2009. Just so, you and I only live for a certain amount of time. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (NKJV) states: "To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die.” We all know our date of birth, but we do not know when we will die. Whether we are red, yellow or blue, will we be ready to meet Jesus Christ when we die? To be sure that you will see Jesus, confess that Jesus is Lord, repent of your sins and receive God’s gift of salvation and you will be saved. (See Romans 10:9-13, and Ephesians 2:8-9)

ROUND THREE By Johan Terblanche

At the recent Augusta masters golf tournament, held in Georgia, United States, Rory McIlroy did very well in rounds one and two to build up a solid lead. Unfortunately, in round three he did not do so well and stood the risk of losing the tournament. But then, in round four, he recovered and won the Augusta Masters tournament for a second time in a row.

Many times, we do well. We experience hassle-free days when all goes according to plan and we feel on top of our game. But then there are those third rounds, days or rounds when we simply don’t do as well as we have hoped. In Rory’s case he just could not achieve what he set out to do during the third round. But it was not because he is a bad golfer for Rory won several master tournaments, including the Augusta master’s tournament, before. Round three of this tournament was just not his round.
But even after having a bad round, Rory didn’t give up on the tournament. He went back to play round four, got a good score, won the tournament and received the winner’s trophy.

So, when you are feeling down, when your very best doesn’t feel enough, when the odds turn against you and you feel like you are having the worst day of your life, don’t give up. Think back on round one and two, when things went well. Then look at your round three to determine what went wrong and get back into the game with the knowledge and the experience you gained in the good and the bad days or rounds of your life. Tackle your round four with courage, and confidence.

And if you feel like you can’t do it on your own, just remember that the Lord who brought you through rounds one to three, will also help you in round four. “We may be hard pressed on every side, but we will not be crushed; we may be perplexed, but we’re not in despair; we may be persecuted, but we will not be abandoned; we may be struck down but will not be destroyed for God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (See 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 and Psalm 46:1)

When facing those difficult round threes, be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, disappointed or distraught, for the Lord is with you. (Josua 1:9) He will bring you through the round threes of your life and give you victory in round four.

FINDING REST By Johan Terblanche

A few weeks ago, we were in church. In front of us there were a mother and her two children. In a whispering but loud enough for me to hear voice, the boy asked his mother if he could lay down in her arms. Without saying a word but with great gentleness she pulled him closer and allowed him to lay down with his head on her lap.

I am sure that there are many who can relate to this. Sure, there are many who are simply tired and looking for a place to rest, but there are others who wants to be close to their mothers, to hear their heartbeats and to know that their mothers are there for them. They are not looking for much. All they want is to be in their mother’s presence and experience their mother’s love.

But even as a grown-up, I often find myself laying down on the couch with my head on my wife’s lap or having my wife laying down with her head on my lap. Also, my grown-up children (Monique who is 32, Leandrie who is 29 and Luan who is 25) often lie down with their heads on my lap or on my chest. Without us talking to each other, we all enjoy these precious moments with one another.

Sometimes, life tends to make us feel worn out, tired and alone. There are days when we battle to cope and barely make it through the day. When this happens or when we are overwhelmed by what is happening, we often call upon the Lord, hoping that He will allow us to rest in His arms or lay our heads in His lap.

These are the days when we need assurance of God’s love, when we want to enjoy His presence and be assured that He is there for us. And even though the Bible tells us that the Lord our shepherd, will let us rest in green meadows and lead us beside peaceful streams, we often feel like this is not the case. (See Psalm 23:1-2)

Still, the Lord wants to assure us that when we turn to Him, He will give us rest. The Word confirms this when it says that he who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. (See Psalm 91:1)

Despite our weakness or tiredness, we can still turn to Jesus who said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

Therefore, let us turn to Lord and let our souls find rest in God from whom our hope comes. For after all, He is our rock, our fortress and our salvation. (See Psalm 62:5-6) Let us rest safely in the arms of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

EVEN WHEN By Johan Terblanche

In the Bible we find many instructions given to us. Allow me to quote a few.

• “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30)
• “Love your neighbour as yourself.” (Mark 12:31)
• “Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37)
• “Be kind to each other.” (Ephesians 4:32)
• “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfil the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
• “Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all people.” (Mark 16:15)

Though God instructed us to do this, there are times that we don’t feel like doing it. There are even times when we don’t want to do it. This often happens when someone did something wrong to us and we just don’t feel like loving, forgiving, or even helping them.
But in reading the Word (Bible), I came across a scripture where Jesus did not feel like doing what was needed. When Jesus was praying in on the mount of Olives, He knew that He was about to be captured and to be killed.

Since He would have preferred not to die, He prayed “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me.” (See Luke 22:42)
However, even when Jesus did not feel like or did not want to go to the cross, He still prayed, “yet not My will, but Yours be done.” (See Luke 22:42) Then, an angel from heaven appeared to Jesus and strengthened him. (See Luke 22:43)

Going back to what the Word instructs us to do, we must realize that these are not just mere instructions, but the will of God for us. Therefor, even when we don’t feel like or don’t want to do what the Lord expects of us, we still need to say, “Not my will, but Your will be done.”

Then, when we submit to or decide to do God’s will, He will give us the strength and the courage to His will or to do what He instructed us to do.

Whenever the Lord leads us to go left while we feel like going right, let us say, “Not my will, but yours be done.” When the Lord tells us to love our neighbour, to forgive those who sinned against us, to be kind to others, to carry each other’s burdens or to tell others about Him, let us pray, “Not my will, but Your will be done” even when we don’t feel like it.

IT’S NOT ME By Johan Terblanche

Many years ago, a glass fell and broke on the kitchen floor. My wife and I rushed to the kitchen to find my son and daughter pointing fingers to each other saying “it’s not me!” And since they were arguing about who was at fault, I ended up sending them both to their rooms while we cleaned up the pieces of glass from the floor.
On many other occasions, while they were small, the children would do the same. When something went wrong, the one would blame the other.

But this is not a something new. In fact. It stems as far back as the Garden of Eden. The first time one person blamed the other is recorded in the book of Genesis, when Adam and Eve ate of the fruit God forbid them to eat. When God spoke to Adam, Adam blamed Eve saying, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” (Genesis 3:12) Then, when God spoke to Eve, she blamed the serpent (snake) saying, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:12) The Lord then punished Adam and Eve by banishing and driving them out of the Garden and Eden. (Genesis 3:23-24)

Sadly, even to this day we often deny that we have sinned and more often blame others for the mistakes we make or the sins we commit. Indeed, even today we say, “It’s not me!” and try to blame somebody else or the devil.

But the Bible is clear. We need to take responsibility for our own actions and the sins we do. In 2 Corinthians 5:10 we read that each one of us will one day appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that we may receive what is due us for the things we have done, whether good or bad.

So, what then is due to us? According to Romans 6:23, the wage of sin is death while Ezekiel 18:20 tells us that the one who sins are the one who will die. It is therefor clear that there is no sense in blaming somebody else when we sin, for God will hold us responsible and He will punish each one of us for the sins we committed.

But there is some good news. The Bible tells us that if we take responsibility, and confess our sins to the Lord, Hewill forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing. (1 John 1:9)

Let us stop blaming others. Let us stop blaming our brothers, sisters, fellow school mates, teachers and parents. Let us confess our sins or wrongdoings and receive forgiveness from the Lord. Let us submit to God and resist the devil. (James 4:7)

PASS THE AMMUNITION
By Johan Terblanche

In 1942 Frank Loesser wrote a song called "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition"

The song tells of a chaplain on a warship under attack. When the seamen asked him to say a prayer, the chaplain put down his Bible, manned one of the ship's gun turrets and began firing at the enemy while saying, "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition”

When I first learned about this song, I thought it to be strange but as I grew older, I realized that there is a lesson to learn.

By nature, humans are lazy beings. Often, we do not do what is required from us and then we expect God to step in and fight the battle on our behalf. Though it is important that we pray and praise the Lord, there are times that we need to do something ourselves while praising the Lord.

Let us look at a few examples; when your father asks you to rake up the leaves, you cannot pray and expect the leaves to disappear. No, you will have to take the rake yourself. When you need to take a test at school, you cannot pray and then go to bed. No, you will need to study for the test. When you are told to do homework, you cannot pray and then spend the rest of the day playing games. No, you need to take up a book and pen and do your homework.

When a person is thirsty, you cannot say a prayer and hope that his thirst will go away. No, you need to take him a glass of water. Just so, praying for your friends to accept Jesus as Saviour is good, but you will need to tell them about Jesus and show them how to live.
You see, it is often required of us to do something. There are many instances where we need to step out or step up after we have prayed.

Does that mean praying is of less importance? No, it simply means that we place our trust in God to help us in the things required of us. A person can study for a test and do well, but when one pray asking God to help him and study the person can do even better. A person can rake the garden by himself, but when he asks God to help him, God may prevent the wind from blowing so that it is easier to rake up the leaves.

When we pray, and praise the Lord, the Lord makes light work of our duties and chores. When we pray and praise the Lord, the Lord will help us overcome the enemy and help us to achieve victory.

Regards and God bless
