LOYALTY
1 Samuel 31:2 “The Philistines fought fiercely against Saul and his sons, and they killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua, Saul's sons.”
Jonathan knew that God had chosen David to be the next king of Israel. In fact, he openly acknowledged this when he told David, “You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you” (1 Samuel 23:17). Unlike his father Saul, Jonathan did not resist God's plan. He loved David, protected him, and supported him during difficult times. Yet Jonathan remained in Saul's household and ultimately shared in the tragic consequences of Saul's downfall. While Scripture does not say that Jonathan died because of a personal failure, his story reminds us that the relationships and alliances we maintain can significantly influence the course of our lives.
Many people remain blindly loyal to leaders even when they clearly see patterns of pride, moral compromise, greed, or spiritual decline. Loyalty is a noble virtue, but it must never take precedence over loyalty to God and His truth. When a leader departs from God's ways, believers should continue to show respect, gratitude, and prayerful concern, but they must not follow that leader into disobedience.
Statement of Truth: When loyalty to spiritual leader or church conflicts with loyalty to God, we must choose God.
I pray that God will grant you the wisdom to honour and respect the people He has placed in your life, while remaining devoted to Him. May God help you to remain faithful to His truth, even when it is difficult to choose. May your loyalty to Christ always surpass your loyalty to any person or institution. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
