1 Kings 18:20-39. Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope – Ps 16: 1-2, 4-5, 8, 11. Matthew 5:17-19.

All will be accomplished

Back at the start of Lent we read the story of the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness. The tempter invites Jesus to throw himself down from the parapet of the temple and let God save him. And Jesus replies with words from the Book of Deuteronomy, ‘You must not put the Lord your God to the test’ as the Hebrews did under Moses in the wilderness. Elijah puts God to the test in our scripture reading today. Happily, God took his side against the prophets of Baal. Do we put God to the test? When we are stricken with illness or disease, do we say, ‘God, if you really exist, make me well again?’ Do we grumble and moan about the heaviness of life and forget all the blessings that it brings? Have we forgotten that God said, ‘My grace is enough for you.’ All will be accomplished.

St Ephrem Deacon and doctor

1 Kings 17:7-16. Lord, let your face shine on us – Ps 4:2-5, 7-8. Matthew 5:13-16.

Hold your shape

In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls His disciples “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” Salt gives flavor and preserves what is good. As Christians, we are called to bring goodness, hope, and truth into the lives of others. When we lose our Christian values, we risk becoming like salt that has lost its taste. Jesus also tells us that a lamp is not meant to be hidden. Our faith is not something to keep to ourselves. Through acts of kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and service, we allow the light of Christ to shine through us. People may not always remember our words, but they will remember the love we show.
Today, Jesus invites us to be a visible witness to the Gospel. By living our faith faithfully each day, we help others encounter God and give glory to our Heavenly Father.
Lord Jesus, help me to be the salt that brings goodness to the world and the light that reflects Your love. May my words and actions lead others closer to You. Amen.

1 Kings 17:1-6. Our help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth – Ps 121: 1-8. Matthew 5:1-12.

Be attentive to others’ needs

In the Beatitudes, Jesus turns the values of the world upside down. The world often praises power, wealth, success, and self-sufficiency, but Jesus calls blessed those who are humble, merciful, pure of heart, peacemakers, and those who suffer for what is right.
The Beatitudes are not simply a list of virtues; they are a portrait of Jesus Himself. He was poor in spirit, gentle, merciful, and willing to suffer for the sake of God’s kingdom. By living the Beatitudes, we become more like Christ.
Today, Jesus invites us to find true happiness not in what we possess, but in our relationship with God and in the way we love others. Even in times of sorrow, struggle, or persecution, we are reminded that God’s blessing is upon us and that our hope rests in His promise of eternal life.
Lord Jesus, help us to live the Beatitudes each day. Make us humble, merciful, and faithful disciples, so that we may reflect Your love in the world and share in the joy of Your kingdom. Amen.

Body and Blood of Christ

Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem – Ps 147:12-15, 19-20. 1 Corinthians 10:16-17. John 6:51-58.

Eat my flesh and drink my blood

In today’s Gospel, Jesus declares: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.” He invites us to receive not just His teachings, but His very life through the Eucharist. The Bread of Life is God’s gift to nourish us on our journey of faith. The Eucharist is more than a symbol; it is a living encounter with Christ. Every time we receive Holy Communion, Jesus strengthens us, deepens our union with Him, and calls us to become more like Him in love, mercy, and service. This Gospel challenges us to ask: Do I truly hunger for Christ? Do I approach the Eucharist with faith and gratitude? As we receive the Bread of Life, may we allow Jesus to transform our hearts and lead us to eternal life.
Lord Jesus, Living Bread from Heaven, nourish me with Your presence in the Eucharist. Strengthen my faith, deepen my love, and help me to live as Your faithful disciple each day. Amen.

St Norbert; Bishop St Marcellin Champagnat

2 Timothy 4:1-8. I will sing of your salvation – Ps 71: 8-9, 14-17, 22. Mark 12:38-44.

Light of truth

Today’s first reading speaks of a time when ‘people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and stop listening to the truth’. It sounds like our own era, when ‘influencers’ are a dime a dozen but truth and wisdom far more difficult to discern. It’s good then that today we recognise the feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, who founded the Marist Brothers – an order known for teaching – and missioned them not to the ‘places of honour’ but to the poorest rural communities where they were most needed. He committed all he had – ‘his whole livelihood’ – to follow Christ where he was led and bring the light of truth where it was most needed.

St Boniface Bishop and Martyr

2 Timothy 3:10-17. O Lord, great peace have they who love your law – Ps 119: 157, 160-161, 165-166, 168. Mark 12:35-37.

Signs of deep trust

St Paul clearly had a special relationship with Timothy, to whom he wrote the letter from which today’s reading is taken. The friends you make through faith are unique, especially if you have weathered a few storms together. Paul and Timothy travelled far and wide together; both went to jail. Timothy is even mentioned as the co-author of the letters to the Philippians, the Colossians and the Thessalonians. That is surely a sign of deep trust. It seems that Timothy was anxious. Writing to the Corinthians, Paul asked the community to ‘put him at ease’. Yet Timothy became the leader of the Christians at Ephesus, proving that even quiet people can lead. All this helps us understand the tone of intimacy in today’s reading. Paul can let his guard down with Timothy: ‘You are well aware that anybody who tries to live in devotion to Christ is certain to be attacked.’ This was certainly true of Paul. It may be true of us. We will value friends if it is.

2 Timothy 2:8-15. Teach me your ways, O Lord – Ps 25: -5, 8-10, 14. Mark 12:28-34.

Patience in seeking what truly matters

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks a question that challenges the crowd’s understanding of the Messiah: “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?” Jesus is not denying His connection to David but revealing that the Messiah is far greater than a political king or earthly ruler. He is David’s Lord, the Son of God.
This Gospel invites us to deepen our understanding of who Jesus truly is. It is easy to admire Jesus as a wise teacher or a good man, but faith calls us to recognize Him as Lord of our lives. When we acknowledge Jesus as Lord, we allow Him to guide our decisions, shape our values, and lead us closer to God. The Gospel ends by noting that “the great crowd heard Him with delight.” May we also listen to Jesus with open hearts and joyful faith, allowing His word to transform us each day.
Lord Jesus, You are more than a teacher or prophet; You are our Lord and Savior. Help us to recognize Your presence in our lives and to follow You with faith, trust, and love. Amen.

2 Timothy 1:1-3, 6-12. To you, O Lord, I lift up my eyes – Ps 123:1-2. Mark 12:18-27.

I know who it is that I have put my trust in

I can put my trust in so many things – technology, the economic system, certain sources of news. But where is my ultimate trust? Can I say, with Paul, that I really know who I have put my trust in, both in this life and beyond? When St Charles Lwanga and his companions were killed for the faith, they witnessed to that absolute trust. In small ways, also, I can claim my own trust in God rather than in passing and fragile things. Perhaps then, when everything in my world goes wrong, I can survive and even thrive with trust in God. We can fan the flame of faith with our trust – both of which are God’s gifts. Let us pray today for greater trust in God.

2 Peter 3:11-15, 17-18. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge – Ps 90: 2-4, 10, 14, 16. Mark 12:13-17.

Give to God what is God’s

So Jesus said to them, ‘Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.’ (Mark 12:15)

In today’s Gospel, we see those who want to ensnare Jesus laying a trap for him with a compliment and a seemingly harmless question. Jesus calls his accusers out on their lie and cuts through their deceit with one question: ‘Why are you testing me?’ (Mark 12:15). Jesus circumvents their trap and demonstrates that the depth of his wisdom is not of this world, pointing his enemies to the Father and reminding them to give to God what is God’s.
Lord Jesus, let me see when I am tested. Let me discern if the test is from you or from a dishonest heart. When a question feels like a trap, remind me that truth leads the soul to wisdom.
