Two KZN hitmen sentenced to life for taxi industry murders

The Pietermaritzburg Regional Court has sentenced two KwaZulu-Natal hitmen to life imprisonment for their roles in a string of taxi industry-related murders.

The convictions mark a significant step in addressing the violent turf wars that have plagued the region’s taxi sector.

The accused, whose identities have been withheld, were found guilty of multiple counts of murder linked to disputes within the lucrative but volatile taxi industry.

The court heard how the pair executed targeted killings, fueling a cycle of retribution and instability in the sector. Evidence presented included witness testimonies and forensic reports tying the men to the crimes.

Magistrate Nompumelelo Gumede, in delivering the sentence, emphasized the devastating impact of such violence on communities and the need for harsh penalties to deter future crimes. “The actions of these individuals have caused untold pain and loss. The court must send a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated,” she stated.

The sentencing has been welcomed by local authorities and community leaders, who hope it will bring some relief to families affected by the ongoing taxi violence.

Police have vowed to continue cracking down on criminal elements within the industry.

This ruling comes amid heightened efforts by law enforcement to curb the lawlessness that has long characterized parts of KwaZulu-Natal’s taxi trade, where rival associations often clash over routes and profits.
