THE TRINITY AND THE GODHEAD — ONE GOD REVEALED AS FATHER, SON, AND HOLY GHOST
One of the most attacked doctrines today is the doctrine of the Trinity. Many now claim the Trinity is “heresy” because the word itself is not found in Scripture. Others insist that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not three distinct Persons, but merely one Person appearing in different “modes” or manifestations.
But the issue is not whether the specific word “Trinity” appears in the Bible. The issue is whether the doctrine is taught.
And when we honestly compare Scripture with Scripture, the conclusion becomes unavoidable:
There is ONE God.
The Father is God.
The Son is God.
The Holy Ghost is God.
Yet the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are distinct from one another.
That is the doctrine of the Trinity.
Not three gods.
Not one Person pretending to be three.
But one God revealed in three distinct Persons.
ONE DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN ONE PERSON
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming the word “one” always means one solitary person.
But Scripture itself shows that “one” can describe unity.
Genesis 2:24 (KJV)
“…and they shall be one flesh.”
A husband and wife are two distinct persons, yet they are called “one.”
The Body of Christ is another example.
1 Corinthians 12:12 (KJV)
“For as the body is one, and hath many members…”
Many believers.
One body.
Ephesians 2:15 (KJV)
“…for to make in himself of twain one new man…”
Plurality within unity is not a foreign concept in Scripture.
So when the Bible teaches one God while also revealing distinction between Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, this is not contradiction.
It is divine revelation.
THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD
The Bible absolutely and clearly teaches monotheism.
Deuteronomy 6:4 (KJV)
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:”
Isaiah 45:5 (KJV)
“I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me…”
1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV)
“For there is one God…”
Biblical Christianity does not teach three gods.
There is one God!!
The question is…
How does Scripture describe that one God?
THE “US” AND “OUR” OF GOD IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
From the very beginning of Scripture, God speaks in a way that reveals plurality within the Godhead.
Genesis 1:26 (KJV)
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…”
God did not say:
“Let me make man in my image.”
He said:
“Let us make man in our image.”
That plural language matters.
Some try to dismiss this by saying God was speaking to angels. But man was not made in the image of angels. Scripture says man was made in God’s image.
Genesis 1:27 (KJV)
“So God created man in his own image…”
The plurality is within God Himself.
This pattern appears again…
Genesis 3:22 (KJV)
“And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us…”
Genesis 11:7 (KJV)
“Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language…”
Isaiah 6:8 (KJV)
“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”
Notice…
• “I” is singular
• “Us” is plural
These passages do not fully explain the Trinity by themselves, but they prepare us for the fuller revelation later given in Scripture.
THE FATHER IS GOD
This is universally accepted in Scripture.
1 Corinthians 8:6 (KJV)
“But to us there is but one God, the Father…”
Philippians 1:2 (KJV)
“Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father…”
No debate exists here:
The Father is God.
JESUS CHRIST IS GOD
The Bible plainly teaches the full deity of Christ.
John 1:1 (KJV)
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Notice both truths…
• The Word was WITH God
• The Word WAS God
Distinction and deity together.
Then…
John 1:14 (KJV)
“And the Word was made flesh…”
Jesus Christ is God manifested in flesh.
Titus 2:13 (KJV)
“…the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”
Hebrews 1:8 (KJV)
“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever…”
The Father Himself calls the Son “God.”
Colossians 2:9 (KJV)
“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
WHAT DOES “GODHEAD” MEAN?
The word “Godhead” refers to the divine nature, deity, or essence of God.
It appears three times in the KJV…
• Acts 17:29
• Romans 1:20
• Colossians 2:9
Colossians 2:9 is teaching that Jesus Christ possesses the FULLNESS of deity bodily.
Christ is not a lesser god.
Not partially divine.
Not merely godlike.
All the fulness of the Godhead dwells in Him bodily.
But notice carefully — The verse does NOT say…
• Jesus IS the Father
• Jesus IS the Holy Ghost
• Jesus is the only Person in the Godhead
Rather, it teaches that the fullness of deity is fully present in Christ because He is God manifested in flesh.
JESUS IS DISTINCT FROM THE FATHER
This is where Oneness theology collapses.
If Jesus IS the Father as the exact same Person, then countless passages become impossible to explain honestly.
Jesus prayed TO the Father.
John 17:5 (KJV)
“And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”
Jesus shared glory WITH the Father before the world existed.
That is eternal relationship.
Not role-playing.
The Father SENT the Son.
John 3:17 (KJV)
“For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world…”
A sender and the one sent are distinct.
The Father loved the Son.
John 5:20 (KJV)
“For the Father loveth the Son…”
Love requires relationship.
ISAIAH 9:6 DOES NOT MEAN JESUS IS THE FATHER
Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
“…his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father…”
Some use this verse to claim Jesus IS God the Father as the same Person.
But that interpretation creates contradictions everywhere else in Scripture.
Jesus constantly distinguished Himself from the Father…
• He prayed to the Father
• He obeyed the Father
• He was sent by the Father
• He sat at the Father’s right hand
Isaiah 9:6 is emphasizing Christ’s deity and eternal fatherly care toward His people — not erasing the distinction between Father and Son.
HEBREWS 1 SHOWS DISTINCTION WITHIN THE GODHEAD
Hebrews 1 is devastating to Oneness theology.
Hebrews 1:8 (KJV)
“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever…”
The Father is speaking TO the Son and calls Him God.
Then…
Hebrews 1:9 (KJV)
“…therefore God, even thy God…”
So…
• The Son is called God
• Yet God speaks TO Him
This perfectly fits Trinitarian doctrine…
distinction without denying deity.
Hebrews 1:3 says Christ is…
“…the express image of his person…”
An image reveals another.
It does not erase distinction.
Colossians 1:15 (KJV)
“Who is the image of the invisible God…”
Jesus perfectly reveals the Father because He shares the same divine essence.
THE HOLY GHOST IS GOD
The Holy Ghost is not merely a force or power. The Holy Ghost speaks, teaches, leads, testifies, and can be grieved.
Acts 5:3–4 (KJV)
“…why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost…”
“…thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”
Lying to the Holy Ghost is lying to God.
2 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)
“Now the Lord is that Spirit…”
THE HOLY GHOST IS DISTINCT FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON
John 14:16 (KJV)
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter…”
Notice all three…
• Jesus praying
• The Father giving
• Another Comforter coming
“Another Comforter” means another distinct Person.
John 14:26 (KJV)
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name…”
Again…
• The Father sends
• The Holy Ghost comes
• In Jesus’ name
Three distinct Persons acting together.
THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST DESTROYS “MODES” THEOLOGY
Matthew 3:16–17 (KJV)
“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water…”
“…the Spirit of God descending like a dove…”
“…a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son…”
At the same moment…
• Jesus is on earth
• The Spirit descends
• The Father speaks from heaven
This is not one person changing masks or modes.
All three are simultaneously present.
THE GREAT COMMISSION REVEALS THE TRIUNE NAME
Matthew 28:19 (KJV)
“…baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”
Notice…
• “Name” is singular
• Yet three are listed
One God.
Three distinct Persons.
PAUL CLEARLY DISTINGUISHES ALL THREE
2 Corinthians 13:14 (KJV)
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost…”
Ephesians 4:4–6 (KJV)
“One Spirit…
One Lord…
One God and Father of all…”
Again…
• Spirit
• Lord
• Father
Distinct, yet perfectly united.
THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH ONENESS THEOLOGY
Oneness theology says…
• Jesus IS the Father
• Jesus IS the Son
• Jesus IS the Holy Ghost
as one Person merely appearing differently.
But this creates impossible problems…
• Did Jesus pray to Himself?
• Did the Father send Himself?
• Did Jesus love Himself before the world existed?
• Was Jesus pretending not to know certain things?
• Why does the Father speak TO the Son?
Scripture consistently presents real relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Not temporary manifestations.
THE TRINITY IS NOT THREE GODS
This accusation is false!!!!
Biblical Trinitarianism teaches…
• One divine essence
• One God
• Three distinct eternal Persons
Not three separate competing gods.
The Father is God.
The Son is God.
The Holy Ghost is God.
Yet there is one God.
1 John 5:7 (KJV)
“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”
Not one Person.
One God.
The doctrine of the Trinity is not paganism, heresy, or man-made confusion.
It is simply the honest attempt to harmonize ALL the Scriptures together.
The Bible reveals…
• One God
• The Father is God
• The Son is God
• The Holy Ghost is God
• The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are distinct from one another
The Trinity does not divide God into three gods.
It recognizes the fullness of what Scripture reveals about the one true God.
The Father is not the Son.
The Son is not the Holy Ghost.
Yet all three are fully and eternally God.
Three distinct Persons.
One Godhead.
One eternal God.
