When God called Moses at the burning bush,
He asked him,
“What is that in your hand?”
(Exodus 4:2)
Moses answered,
“A staff.”
It was just an ordinary stick.
A shepherd’s tool.
A symbol of Moses' quiet, hidden life.
But then God said something unexpected,
“Throw it down.”
As if telling Moses,
Surrender it.
And when Moses let it go,
that ordinary staff became extraordinary.
It became a sign.
A miracle.
A weapon heaven would use.
I noticed this pattern,
It wasn’t powerful in Moses’ hand.
It only became powerful in God’s.
It's the same for us,
some things only carry power
after we surrender them.
Your skills.
Your dreams.
Your plans.
Your timeline.
Your calling.
Your identity.
Your future.
In your hands, they’re ordinary.
They're redictable.
They're Limited.
But when you release them,
when you trust God enough to throw them down,
what was natural becomes supernatural.
What was simple becomes sacred.
Because God does His greatest work
not through what we hold,
but through what we hand over.
Maybe that’s why God asked Moses,
not “What do you want?”
but “What is in your hand?”
Because the miracle begins
where the surrender happens.
And here’s the part we forget,
The staff only became a sign
after it left Moses’ control.
The same is true for you.
Your calling becomes powerful
not when you feel ready,
but when you surrender it.
Your gifts become fruitful
not when you understand them,
but when you give them back to God.
Your life becomes impactful
not when you hold on tight,
but when you finally let go.
And here’s the Gospel connection we cannot miss,
Jesus didn’t merely throw something down,
He laid Himself down.
Jesus surrendered,
His will,
His rights,
His glory,
His life.
And in that surrender,
He accomplished the greatest miracle of all,
the salvation of the world.
The Cross is the ultimate proof
that surrender leads to resurrection power.
So when God asks you,
“What is that in your hand?”
He’s not trying to take something from you.
He’s inviting you
