“A brief, but excellent portrait of a true minister found in Malachi. It tells how a minister or anyone else who is called to speak in God‘s name (technically every Christian) should live and testify.
“My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him as an object of reverence; so he revered Me and was in awe of My name. True instruction was in his mouth and injustice was not found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and justice, and he turned many back from wrongdoing. For the lips of a priest should maintain knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the Lord of armies.”~ Malachi 2:5-7
1. REVERENCE v. 5
“My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him as an object of reverence; so he revered Me and was in awe of My name.”
True knowledge begins with a reverential awe of God. All things spiritual begin with such reverence, and God‘s minister‘s need to cultivate it more than anything else.
2. COMMITMENT TO THE TRUTH v. 6
“True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips.”
To speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, is a large assignment, which is the preacher’s duty to proclaim. When we proclaim God’s word, we proclaim what is eternally truthful – not only true for a particular moment of history or a particular person, but true for all time and for all people. To proclaim the Word is a great responsibility.
3. CHARACTER AND PIETY v. 6
“He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.”
The essential requirement here is godliness.
4. PRESERVES KNOWLEDGE v. 7
“For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.”
“Malachi is not talking here about the mere conveyance of information, as if the preacher were to be merely a store house of details about the history of Hebrew Kings and the background of the New Testament, the fine points of theology, or quotes from the Giants of Church history. Malachi is talking about the knowledge of God, which is salvation (John 17:3), and about the way to live a God-pleasing life. The godly minister passes this on, and the sheep look to him for instruction and are fed.”
* May God give us many such ministers.
* May He make those He has given faithful to the task.
* May He give us all ears to hear what the Spirit says to us through them for the church’s benefit.”
