Hellenic Welfare Society Hellenic Welfare Society supports and raises funds for disadvantaged people. Hosts of The My Big Fat Greek Tea Party

The Hellenic Welfare Society of KwaZulu Natal was founded 40 years ago for the purposes of providing moral and financial support to the needy and/or aged in our community, and is administered by a committee of 8 ladies on a purely voluntary basis. The Society receives no funding from any source and relies solely on donations, subscriptions and fund-raising events to raise the funds needed to meet

requirements. Simultaneously, we have worked towards establishing a residential home to provide companionship and assisted living and after many years we have been able to acquire a property in Durban North for this purpose. The property needed some renovations which are now complete, but our reserves are now seriously depleted and we have had to increase our fund-raising efforts to help us cover the costs of running the home as well as providing financial assistance to a number of families and individuals on a monthly basis. One of these events is a “Big Fat Greek Tea Party”, the first of which was held on 7th October 2011. This was a great success and by popular demand we hosted another one in October 2012 at which there were 350 attendees, many of whom said they could not wait for the next one. And so we are planning to hold a third Big Fat Greek Tea Party at the Hellenic Cultural Centre, Durban North on Friday, March 7th 2014 at 08.30 am. The morning will comprise breakfast, a guest speaker – Joani Mitchell (Masterchef finalist 2013), a fashion segment and other entertainment, and we are hoping to again have at least 350 ladies in attendance.
