6 Rabi ul Awwal marks the urs of Hadrat Sheikh Sayed Ahmed Badsha Peer رحمة الله عليه.
He was a noble Hassani and Hussaini Sayed, belonging to all four great silsilas Qadri, Chishti, Suharwardi and Naqshbandi. A descendant of Rasoolullah ﷺ, he was sent to the shores of South Africa in 1860 with the very first ship of Indians who came as labourers.
While others were busy in the fields, Sayiduna Hadrat Badsha Peer رحمة الله عليه sat in meditation, lost in zikr of Allah. His fellow workers feared he would be punished for neglecting his work, but at the end of the day his plot was always complete. Unseen hands would finish his task. This was no ordinary man this was a Wali of Allah Almighty whose work was done by Spiritual Beings.
When his true rank became known, he was freed from labour. Refusing any wage, he chose only to be taken to Durban, where he lived humbly at the Grey Street Masjid. Few could recognise his spiritual status he was a majzoob, a beloved of Allah Almighty , absorbed in the Divine, unconcerned with the dunya. His words and predictions opened the way for Islam’s growth in this land.
He left this world on 6 Rabi ul Awwal 1886, on a blessed Friday, at the time of the second adhan of Jummah. His janaza was prayed by the musallees of Grey Street Masjid, and he rests in Brook Street Cemetery in Durban.
Later, when Sayiduna Hadrat Soofie Saheb رحمة الله عليه arrived in 1895, he declared, “Here lies a kaamil wali, a friend of Allah,” and honoured his grave. Since then, lovers of Awliya gather daily to draw blessings from this great Saint.
Hadrat Badsha Peer رحمة الله عليه came to this land with no wealth, no status, no worldly ambition only the love of Allah Almighty and His Beloved Rasool ﷺ. Today we are Muslims in this land because of the sacrifices, duas and barakah of such Awliya.
May Allah grant us his fayz, keep us firm on the love of the Ahlul Bayt, the Sahaaba and the Awliya, and allow us to live with the same sincerity. Ameen.
