John 10:22-30
Good Shepherd Sunday
Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers. We thank God for your lives and for all that you do for all of us.
The fourth Sunday in Easter is traditionally designated as the Good Shepherd Sunday and Vocation Sunday. The church in her wisdom found it fitting to make this Sunday focus on Jesus who points himself as a shepherd but not just any shepherd but the good shepherd.
The gospel of John by it theological focus life (authentic life)and light is inseparable and it both operates together as centrality of this gospel. Jews asked Jesus on the chapter read today , why is he not disclosing himself as the Messiah but keeping them in suspense and they ask Jesus to them plainly whether his the Messiah. Jesus’ response to them was indirectly, instead of saying Yes he is , he preferred to say ‘I told you but you did not believe in me , and his sheep knows Him and hear His voice and follow Him.
The point of the imagery that Jesus used of a shepherd and sheep in this gospel is point the depth of relational aspect between the shepherd and sheep. It is a deep relationship that moves a shepherd to lay down his life (divine life) for sheep to experience the true essence of God’s very life no matter what. Jesus shared a strong message to his first hearers and to future listeners or readers about the relationship that ought to be between God and human beings as special those who are believing in Jesus Christ. This kind of relationship friends brings a radical connection and union between the Shepherd (God or Jesus ) and sheep (Church). It further calls the church to learn from the good shepherd to lay down one’s very own life for others to gain life.
In a world that full of many shepherds especially where money, power , class , opulence , materials and status shepherds we Christians ought to unfold God’s very life and point the world to the GOOD Shepherd i.e. the God of love, peace , compassion, kindness and justice. Amen…KH
