The Roman soldiers thought they were being clever.
A man claiming to be King of the Jews deserved a crown — so they wove one from a thornbush and pressed it into His skull. It was cruelty disguised as mockery. A joke at the expense of a beaten prisoner.
But they had no idea what they were actually doing.
Go back to Genesis 3. When Adam sinned and God pronounced the consequences on creation He said something specific about the ground — it would produce thorns and thistles. The thorn was not random. It was the physical symbol of the curse that sin had brought on the created world. Every thornbush that ever scratched a farmer's hand was a visible reminder that something had gone wrong between humanity and God.
For thousands of years the thorn represented the curse.
Then Roman soldiers wove one into a crown and pressed it onto the head of the one man who had come to deal with that curse permanently.
Jesus didn't just endure the crown of thorns. He wore the curse of Genesis 3 on His head — absorbed it into His own body — so that the curse could die with Him on the cross.
What Rome intended as humiliation was actually coronation.
The King of creation putting on the symbol of creation's brokenness — to break it forever.
Galatians 3:13 says it plainly — Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.
The soldiers meant it as a joke.
God meant it as the answer to Genesis 3.
