TIPS:

17. Now it is time to plan your irrigation method and system. You do not want to have to dig it up later and/or for it to be damaged by any future projects;

18. It is common practice to rather install your irrigation pipes and sprayers under your lawn than in the flower beds, where they might be disturbed by gardening activities;

19. Consider having your irrigation system installed professionally. It sometimes becomes very technical depending on water pressure, the size of the various garden areas versus what type of sprayers are required for different areas, volume of water required by various plant species etc.

20. Ensure that your contractor installs the pipes deeper than a standard spade depth, that no leaks are detected and that the functionality is what has been promised, after installation. It is very important that all garden areas are reached with water when irrigation is operational. Also install pipes for water features and electricity cables for any electrical requirements (gates, lights, pumps, etc);

21. Only appoint trusted contractors after you have inspected /investigated previous installations. Think twice before you appoint the cheapest contractor and/or use the cheapest material. You will definitely regret your decision when you have to dig up everything later, with damage to your garden, irrigation system and permanent structures.

TIPS:

13. Large trees and shrubs are planted on the perimeter of gardens, but not too close to border walls;

14. If trees are planted to close to border walls they might damage your border walls over time. They may also pose a security risk in that branches might be used as an aid to enter properties illegally;

15. Trees and large shrubs too close to the house will reduce sunlight, might damage the structure of a house/paving and reduce one's view of the rest of the garden;

16. Leaves and dust might also end up in the gutters causing them to block if not cleaned regularly.

9. Plan your garden - do you want a desert, tropical, formal, manicured, etc. garden or combination of any of these ? Do you want shade, a large or small lawn, flowers, shrubs etc ?; Do you want a summer or winter garden. Most probably you will want a combination of these ?. Write it down;

10. Your choice/s above will influence your decision for which type of plants, trees, lawn and shrubs to budget;

11. This will also determine how your soil should be prepared;

12. Remember it is good practice to first consider plants indigenous to your country and province. Also take care that you will not plant anything declared as non-desirable;
