SUNDAY OF PENTECOST

THEME: FEAR TO VICTORY
Sermon Text John 20: 19 – 23

What is Pentecost Sunday?
Pentecost is celebrated as the birthday of the Church, the day the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, equipping them with strength, courage, and boldness to spread the Gospel to the world.

The Key Question:
How did the disciples go from hiding behind locked doors in John 20 to boldly preaching before nations in Acts 2? They encountered the risen Christ. That encounter changed everything — and it still does today.

Key message:
Jesus walks through locked doors and no amount of fear or doubt can keep Him out. He appeared to the terrified disciples and spoke peace over them before anything else. Many believers today still hide their faith; the sermon challenges us to be known and not be ashamed.
Scars are evidence of victory. Jesus' wounds were not erased by the resurrection. They proved that victory comes through suffering, not around it, turning the disciples' fear into joy.

We are not spectators: "As the Father sent Me, I also send you." (John 20:21). Believers are called to actively carry hope, truth, and salvation to the world, to brighten the corner where they are.
The Holy Spirit transforms: When the Spirit came at Pentecost, the fearful became fearless, the silent became bold, and the weak became powerful. Most disciples died rather than deny the Gospel, and they stood boldly in the word of God.

Closing Message:
Friday was pain. Saturday was silence. But Sunday changed everything through resurrection of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.
Because Jesus is alive, fear no longer has the final word. Rise in faith, walk in boldness, and carry the Gospel without fear.

"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." — Psalm 30:5. No matter how difficult the night may be, because Jesus rose again, we also hold on to hope knowing that joy comes in the morning

Amen.

6th Sunday of Easter
Service Leader: Ms Lufuno Madzhiga
Liturgist: Ms Tebogo Muthabuli
Preacher: Ms Tshifhiwa Ramakuela

This is a sermon based on 1 Peter 3:13–22, titled "Suffering for Righteousness, and a celebration of Mother's Day.

Peter, originally known as Simon, was described as passionate but also impulsive. He was a leading apostle, and wrote this letter from Rome to encourage Christians in Asia Minor (modern Turkey) who were facing severe persecution. He urges them to suffer well, following Christ's example.
Five key themes were identified and briefly described below:
Suffering for Righteousness: enduring hardship because of one's faith and commitment to doing good, not as a result of wrongdoing. Examples given include whistleblowers in South Africa and figures like Babita Deokaran and Nelson Mandela.
Defence of Faith (Apologetics): being ready to give a calm, reasoned explanation of one's beliefs, with gentleness and respect rather than aggression.
The Example of Christ: Jesus modelled humility, compassion, forgiveness, and sacrificial love, and believers are called to follow that example.
Baptism and Salvation: baptism is presented not as a physical cleansing but as a pledge of a clear conscience toward God, connected to Christ's resurrection.
Spirits in Prison: a reference to the debated passage about Jesus proclaiming to imprisoned spirits, interpreted here as fallen angels.

In Closing: The congregation is called to live without fear, respond with gentleness, and keep their eyes on Christ's victory. "Let your fear of the unknown be replaced by your faith in the one who has overcome what you fear." Amen!

Text: John 10:9–10
In John 10:9 Jesus says, “I am the gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved.”
This verse reminds us of an important truth: there is only one gate into God’s kingdom, and that gate is Jesus Christ.
In biblical times, a sheep pen had only one entrance. At night, the shepherd would lie across that gate so that nothing could enter to harm the sheep. The shepherd became the gate. In the same way, Jesus stands between us and danger, between us and destruction. Life is found only through Him.
So the question for us today is simple but serious:
Are we entering through the gate, or are we still climbing over the wall?
Climbing over the wall means trying to reach God in our own way—through good behaviour, religion, reputation, or intelligence. It’s when we appear Christian, but we have not truly repented or fully trusted Christ. Jesus is clear: any other way leads to loss, not life.
Jesus also warns us about thieves—those who come to steal, kill, and destroy. Today, these thieves are the many voices around us. Voices from social media, culture, fear, comparison, friends, family, and even unhealthy competition in church. These voices push us away from the gate and tempt us to look elsewhere for life.
And thieves always subtract.
When we listen to them, we lose peace.
We lose joy.
We lose hope.
And eventually, we lose our sense of purpose.
But Jesus is different.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He does not lead by fear or threats. In biblical times, shepherds walked ahead, calling their sheep by name. The sheep followed because they knew the shepherd’s voice.
And so it is with us.
Amid all the noise of the world, the voice of Jesus stands out—but only if we know Him.
We learn His voice by reading God’s Word, by prayer, and by walking daily with Him. The more time we spend with Jesus, the clearer His voice becomes.
When we follow Jesus, we do not lose—we gain.
Jesus adds to our lives.
He gives peace in chaos.
Strength in weakness.
Purpose when others say we are nothing.
And He promises us life in abundance.
Think of a cellphone on 1% battery. It is barely surviving. But once it is connected to the power source, it comes alive again. In the same way, Jesus is our source of life. When we remain connected to Him, we no longer just survive—we live abundantly.
So today, let us choose wisely.
Let us come through the gate, not over the wall.
Let us trust Christ completely, not partially.
Let us repent, listen to His voice, and follow Him wholeheartedly.
Let our worship come from love, not duty.
Jesus knows your name.
He calls you.
And He promises you life—abundant life.
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
