September 2001.
At a time when many were silent, Advocate Shaykh Faaik Gamieldien spoke openly and courageously in the Cape Argus against injustice in Palestine and the dangers of political Zionism.
While it may seem commonplace now, speaking and less commonly writing openly against Zionism in mainstream media came with real consequences. He challenged the conflation of Judaism with political Zionism and warned against the dehumanisation of Palestinians long before it became impossible for the world to ignore. At the time he was responding to articles by the Jewish Board of Deputies who held as much sway then as they do now. There was no TikTok, there were no YouTubers posting minute by minute. There was no Sumud Flotilla, or Al Jazeera streaming 24 hours.
More than 25 years later, these words still carry weight and remind us how important it is to speak truth with knowledge, principle, and conviction, even when it is unpopular.
A piece of our intellectual and historical legacy worth preserving.
