Homily for Fourth Sunday of Lent A: Jesus is the Light of the World.

by Fr Zane Godwin

"I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will have the light of life." (John 8:12)

In the New Testament, particularly in John's Gospel, physical sight is symbolic of spiritual sight—that is, faith—and physical blindness is symbolic of spiritual blindness or lack of faith. Today's Gospel and the healing of the man born blind are an invitation to consider what it means to say that Jesus is the light of the world.

The man born blind progressively develops in faith. More and more he comes to know the person of Jesus Christ. He refers to Jesus first as "the man called Jesus," then as "a prophet," then as one "from God." Finally, having experienced the compassion of Jesus, he makes the leap of faith: "Lord, I believe," and he worships Jesus.

The Pharisees, although they have physical sight, become more and more spiritually blind. They refuse to see the work of God staring them in the face.

We need to examine ourselves in terms of our own blindness. We all have 'inner Pharisees' that remain focused on our sinfulness and unworthiness, despite God's healing and forgiveness. We need to ignore these 'inner Pharisees.' Instead, we must seek out the Lord and thank him.

We can experience the tender compassion of Jesus and hear him saying: "You are looking at him, he is speaking to you." His amazing grace is the cure for our blindness.

Homily for the Third Sunday of Lent, Year A 8 March 2026
by Fr Zane Godwin

Most of us have known a quiet, persistent sense that something is missing; that we are searching for something we cannot quite name; that the things we reach for to fill us — work, pleasure, company, achievement — satisfy for a while, and then leave us empty again. That thirst has a name.

Today's Gospel tells us that Jesus knows our thirst better than we do, and has been waiting to meet us.

The real thirst within us is for God. There is a deep yearning and longing within all of us for meaning, purpose and fulfilment of life. Jesus meets us at the wells of our own lives and offers us living water. Jesus is the divine bridegroom, waiting at the well of your life, longing to enter into a deep and lasting covenant with you.

No matter our past, our weaknesses and failings, nothing can put us beyond a conversation with Jesus, nothing can put us beyond his saving help. Jesus is more concerned about us than about our sins.

Lent is a time for examining the obstacles in our lives to receiving living water. Leave the old water jars of your lives, and go to him for living water, so that you may not thirst again.

Homily for Second Sunday of Lent - March 2026
by Fr Zane Godwin

God called Abram to leave his country, his family, his people, and go to a new land—stepping out of his comfort zone, taking the risk of going somewhere far away. Lent is frequently described as a journey. Our vocation is to journey with Jesus to a new place. We should be desiring more, seeking more, wanting more for ourselves as beloved sons and daughters of God. Consider where you have come from, where you are now, and where the Lord is calling you to go.

Lent is our prompt to move, to grow in our relationship with God. Pope Benedict XVI said: "The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness." We should be desiring more, seeking more, wanting more for ourselves as beloved sons and daughters of God.

In the Transfiguration, Jesus revealed his glory—giving his disciples a glimpse of the resurrection to come. This can serve as our strength too. Remembering who Jesus is, and recalling his merciful love for us, can hold us up in times of confusion, doubt, and suffering.

Just as Jesus touched the disciples on the mountain and said, "Rise and have no fear," he says the same to us today. How is the Lord calling you to change? What journey are you being invited on this Lent? May we pray: "Lord, I say yes to anything you ask of me—even before I know what it is. Amen."
