CSO - Christelike Seemansorganisasie / Christian Seaman's Organisation Bediening aan seemanne reeds vir meer as 80 jaar/ Serving seafarers for more than 80 years.

*In 1944, the Reformed Churches and the Hervormde Kerk in Cape Town, realized that there was a dire need amongst the seamen who visited the harbour. On 9 November 1944 these congregations founded the Nederlandse Afrikaanse Seemanskomitee (Dutch Afrikaans Seaman's Committee), with the aim of caring for the needs of Dutch soldiers and seamen on their way to and from Indonesia. At that time all the work was done on a voluntary basis. In the course of time it was clear that these people needed specialized care. A person was appointed, at a minimal renumeration, to visit these ships as often as possible. A few of the congregations started to support the work financially. In due course both the Reformed Churches decided to work on their own in Cape Town, and broke away. For many years, only Dutch ships were given any attention but gradually it became abundantly clear that there were immense opportunities for mission work to be done amongst the seamen in the Cape Town harbour. At that stage the name of the committee was changed to the CHRISTELIKE SEEMANS WELSYN ORGANISASIE (THE CHRISTIAN SEAMAN'S WELFARE ORGANISATION). Despite the use of the word "welfare", the modus operandi changed all the more and the focus was much stronger on the spiritual welfare than the physical welfare of the seaman. From 1972 onward there was great progress. Durban, the largest of the South African harbours, became the next field of activity. Towards the end of 1975 the first harbour mission worker was appointed in Saldanha Bay. When the very first ship entered the new harbour, our workers were there to receive them. Although we were not quite ready for the first ship in Richards Bay, our organisation started its activities there soon after. The organisation was growing with leaps and bounds by then and on 1 April 1991 we opened a branch in Port Elizabeth. The Seaman's Organisation started as an interdenominational organisation. Thanks to its healthy growth, its activities became known to it's numerous supporters throughout the country. Our donors (co-workers) contributed immensely by publicizing our work. The result is that we now have donors throughout the country who represent practically all English and Afrikaans churches as well as donors in America and Britian. These donors support us through their donations and prayers. When the Welfare Act was amended, the organisation was officially recognized as a religious body and the word "welfare" was dropped from the name. Since 1978 its official name is the CHRISTIAN SEAMAN'S ORGANISATION.

Its mine!

These two Filipino seafarers on board a cargo ship in Coega arrived for lunch after a long night shift. Great was their surprise when, the moment they walked in, they received a Bible and a warm beanie.

Before they were physically fed, they first received spiritual nourishment.

Gratitude toward the CSO and its donors was the only response they could give.

The dividing line disappears.

There is one mess, one dining area and one TV room. Yet there is a silent dividing line that shouts that all people on board are not equal. The stylish, soft, white upholstered chairs are for the officers’ mess, with hard, rickety plastic chairs for normal seamen. The soft chairs are in front of the screen. The hard chairs are like wall flowers along the edges. Chairs arranged according to value... unambiguously also an indication of your value on board.

Let me explain. An ordinary seaman earns mostly a minimum wage, barely covering the breadline. Rand for rand the difference between a Captain’s salary and that of an ordinary seaman is as far apart as the East is from the West. That is one aspect, but what is worse is that the men are often treated accordingly too. It is as if they are the dreck without any value and are simply on board to serve others.

Loffie, of course, is invited to sit on the white comfortable chairs, but he walks on. He purposefully walks to the rickety chairs and sits down next to a man that is probably not noticed very often. He asks his name and listens to his story. With empathy he shares the Word that cannot distinguish, on any level, who or what you are. In the context of the Cross, the chair you sit on remains irrelevant.

During his daily work Loffie meets the world. He meets men from the poorest parts of India and the Philippines, but also from Bangladesh, Thailand en Myanmar. Over the past years the sea also brought more men from Russia and the Ukraine - caught in the grip of war, afraid to go home. Today there is a new stream of men from Eastern Europe - all ordinary seamen from Croatia, Bulgaria ... most of them driven by need.

They sign contracts for nine months. It means nine months away from their children. Nine months without the voice of a dad, making the voice a mere memory. Poverty forces them to the seas, but it leaves a gap that can only be filled by God.

This is exactly where remarkable things happen.

Every new nationality is accompanied by another language, a new language and every new language opens the door for the Word. The love and mercy of the Man of the Cross is whispered in passages where it had never been heard before. Chinese literature is distributed. Prayers are mouthed silently. Hearts are opened and become receptive.

Thank you for being part of this and for your financial support. Thank you for helping us carry this silent, but deep work. Please pray for the ‘ordinaries’ of the seas. Pray that they will experience the bigger Truth than the chair on which you have to sit - that a chair does not make the man. Also remember Loffie and each of our Chaplains in your prayers, pray that they will continue to sit where others do not want to sit - until every man knows: He is seen and he is loved. God’s love and mercy is for him too.

Juis hier, gebeur dikwels merkwaardige dinge.

Hande

Hardwerkende hande, vuil hande, ywerige hande, ontvanklike hande, dankbare hande. Hulle werk, middagete en selfone was vir ‘n oomblik vergete to hulle nuwe Bybels ontvang.

Hands

Hardworking hands, dirty hands, eager hands, receiving hands, grateful hands. On board a cargo ship in Port Elizabeth, these hands tell a story of the impact God’s Word has on seafarers. For a moment, their work, lunch, and mobile phones were forgotten as they received their new Bibles. It is the hands and hearts of our donors that made this possible.

Ninja reading Bible!

Dankie!

Ninja reading Bible!

So we get this precious story from our chaplain Chris Viljoen in Durban harbour:

The seafarer wanted to open his face, but I wanted a photo that was true to the real seafaring life of sun and dust. They are in the general cargo area in Durban port where there is often a lot of dust and noise. After I took it he said the title of the photo is: "Ninja reading Bible" 😂

It's donors who make this possible! Thank you!
