History of Belgravia Islamic Society
The year 1974 marked a major change in the lives of the community of Belgravia, for it was during the month of April that Mr Omar Majiet was approached by Mr Isaacs with a proposal that was to benefit the whole community at large
On the 12th May 1974, at the then residence of Mr M Habib Kagee at 33 7th Avenue, Belgravia Estate, Mr Isaacs, at the referral of Mr
Umar Majiet, donated a plot of ground, in the presence of a group of people, thereby fulfilling a promise, he undertook from his parents, may Allah (s.w.t) shower his choicest blessings on them and grant them Jannatul Firdaus, Ameen. The plot was donated to a society to be formed by the brothers present, for purpose of Islamic education. A week later, on the 19th May 1974, a board of officials was elected as office bearers in order to transfer the plot, namely:
Mr I Adams (Chairman)
Mr S Japie (Secretary)
Mr M Isaacs (Treasurer)
Members that were to server on the Board of Trustees were:
Mr A de Vries (Al-Marhoom)
Mr G Salie (Al-Marhoom)
Mr M.H Kagee
At a later meeting held on the 10th July 1974 at the residence of Mr A. de Vries, Mr M Habib Kagee was proposed and accepted the proposal of Presidency “conditionally” subject to confirmations regarding the Trusteeship. This proposal was carried by the majority. The first Executive Meeting was held on the 7th August 1974 at the residence of the Chairman, Mr Isgak Adams. The project was then advertised and many of the community members came on board to assist in establishing what we are all enjoying today “MASJIED NURUS-SALAAM / THE MADRASSAH”
