The Recreation and Parks Department can confirm that a section of the Maitland Cemetery was affected by a fire early this morning.

The fire was detected at approximately 06:00 – it appears that it started on PRASA land abutting the cemetery, but the department is awaiting confirmation from the Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire affected the railway side of the Gate 5 section of the cemetery.

Initial assessments indicate that wooden memorial work on some graves was damaged, like crosses and picket fencing.

Should any relatives require assistance to locate graves so they can check for damage, they’re asked to please contact the Maitland Cemetery.

Heavenly Father,
We come before You with heavy hearts, grieving the loss of these precious children.
Lord, You are close to the broken-hearted, and we ask that You wrap each family and friend in Your loving arms.

Bring comfort where there is deep sorrow,
peace where there is confusion,
and strength where hearts feel weak and overwhelmed.
May Your presence be felt in every home, every tear, and every silent moment of pain.

Lord, remind them that they are not alone,
that You are walking beside them through this valley of grief.
Grant them rest when the nights feel long,
hope when the days feel dark,
and courage to face each new tomorrow.

We entrust these dear children into Your eternal care,
and we pray that their families may one day find healing and peace in Your promises.

In Jesus’ name we pray,

As we enter this festive season, we extend our heartfelt wishes of peace, comfort, and gentle moments of joy to you and your loved ones.
We hold close in our thoughts those who are grieving the loss of someone dear, trusting that cherished memories and God’s presence will bring strength and consolation.

Gender-Based Violence is not just a statistic — it is a wound carried in homes, in communities, in hearts. Too many have suffered in silence, believing their cries would go unheard. But today we say: we hear you, we see you, and we stand with you.

May we be the generation that refuses to look away. May we be the hands that comfort, the voices that speak truth, and the hearts that choose compassion over judgement. Let us teach our sons respect and our daughters strength, and build a world where love is safe, where home is peace, and where violence has no place.

To survivors: your courage inspires us. Your story matters. You are not alone.
And to those still in the shadows: may you find safety, support, and the strength to reach out.

Let us stand united — for healing, for justice, and for change.
