Title: PEACE UNTIL THE END.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega,"says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty".
( Revelation 1:8 )
And so we reach the last day of the old year, through His grace. There are many things we are ashamed of, but there are also many things we are thankful for. There are many reproaches for missed opportunities, but we have also received so much grace from God. The year brought joy, but also grief; victory, but also defeat; sunshine, but also storms.
However, we may still call God "our Father", the biggest privileged a humble human being can expect. Let us therefore count our blessings today, in the knowledge that He remains constant - yesterday, today and in all eternity.
You are richer today than you were yesterday if you smiled often; could give something of yourself to others; could forgive your enemies; make new friends; convert your problems into opportunities. You are richer today than you were yesterday if you made time to notice God's handiwork in everyday things; if you learned to distinguish the essential things in life; if you had a little more patience with others' faults
You are wealthy today if a small child smiled at you, or if a stray dog licked your hand; if you sought out the best in others and if you gave the best of yourself to your fellow man and to God. Then you begin the new year secure in His love.

Title: GOD'S PERFECT METHOD.

"He has done everything well".
( Mark 7:37 )
Most people want to conclude the year that has come to an end in the presence of God, and enter the new, unknown year under the guidance of His merciful and loving hand.
God speaks to us in many ways, but He speaks most closely to us through His Son and His Word. With the Word before us, we have to look back on the road we have travelled and beg His friendly light to illuminate the road stretching out ahead of us. On New Year's Eve we are not allowed simply to contemplate the transience of life - the mere thought of our mortality is enough to upset us - but the content of the year behind us is much more important than its duration.
In the past year the Lord has done so much in our lives, giving it meaning and quality. All of this is undeserved grace. We do not deserve what we have achieved. We can merely confess: "Everything He does is good." The year did not bring only joy, but that is not necessarily bad. Sometimes God tests us with grief, but this too is for our own good.
When we reach the end of the pilgrimage, as we have reached the end of this year, we will clasp our hands together in amazement and humbly confess that He did everything well. With this knowledge we can take our leave of the old year with peace of mind.

Title: CHRIST IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE.

"Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age".
( Matthew 28:20 )
One of the glorious truths of the gospel is that Christ is always available for his followers who need Him. This is a comforting knowledge in these last days of the old year, when we are often overcome by an inexplicable melancholy.
The comforting truth is that the Master is with you whenever you are. While you strive to get to know Him better, and while you try to break through your doubt and uncertainty, He is at your side in your struggle. It is as if He wants to tell you: "Stop struggling with your self-made doubt and fear and come to Me I am the One who will give you calm and peace.
Christian pilgrims know that if they accept this merciful invitation, they will have to relinquish all their pet sins, which have become part of their lives. Unfortunately, there are those who want to claim the presence of the living Christ on their own terms. This can never happen though, because His presence can only be experienced and enjoyed if you meet His requirements.
The basis of your Christianity is your acceptance of the living Savior. Without that your faith has no foundation and you will be unable to venture into the new year. Together with Christ you also accept the Holy Spirit. Through the working of the Holy Spirit you become aware of the presence of Christ with every step that you take.

Title: JOYOUS CHRISTIANITY.

"My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour".
( Luke 1:46-47)
Many people view their religion as a heavy and sometimes unbearable burden. They easily frown upon any semblance of light - heartedness in spiritual matters. They stoop somberly under the heavy burden of their spiritual conscience. This is definitely not what God intended.
The faith of the Christian should be a joyous experience. Your Father takes joy in and is intended in your life. He is happy when you are happy; He consoles you in sadness and grief; He supports you when the burden becomes too much for you; He helps you up when you stumble over obstacles; He enjoys your successes as you enjoy them yourself.
Christianity does not eliminate joy and happiness from life. On the contrary, it returns happiness to your life. Through your communion with the living Christ you realise the blessing of His presence every day. The more you praise and thank Him, the more happiness you glean from your spiritual life.
Happiness is the fruit of the Holy Spirit ( Galatians 5:22) Your surrender and devotion should be such that the joy of the Lord is revealed across the entire spectrum of your life. Then every day becomes a joyous Christ-feast.

Title: LIBERATING INTROSPECTION.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me , and lead me in the way everlasting.
( Psalm 139:23-24)

It is once again that time of year when we have to take stock and do introspection. It is only fitting that we pray the above prayer together with David during these days.
Some prayers make no demands on the one who prays. They lull the conscience. However, to pray meaningfully and in such a way that it also pleases the Holy Spirit, a prayer must be wholly truthful and it must be accompanied by a sincere willingness to engage in through introspection.
Requesting God to know your heart and to test your thoughts can be an experience that completely re-creates you. It strips you of all egotism, superficiality and hypocrisy. You see yourself as God sees you, and you may not always like what you see. It is humbling, but it can also be liberating.
Testing and evaluating your spiritual life is an urgent necessity. It is the condition for service: if we cannot pass God's test, He cannot employ us in His service. Only when the Holy Spirit compels us to do introspection do we become useful instruments in the hands of the Lord, and only then do we work for His honour. Then we no longer fear the future, but we place our weak hands in His almighty hand and walk purposefully towards the unknown future.

TITLE: THE AFTERGLOW OF CHRISTMAS

The shepherds return, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
( Luke 2:20)
The shepherds from the fields of Ephrathah witnessed the miracle of that first Christmas Eve. Each of us experiences something of the miracle of Christmas every year, in the Christmas carols, colourful lights and in the gifts that were received. There is a spirit of love and goodwill everywhere. However, the spirit of Christmas discarded on the garbage heaps, together with the wilted Christmas tree is useless. It means a mockery of the deeper meaning of the Christ -feast.
Would it not be wonderful if we could preserve the special bottle a week for the entire year? After the song of the angels has died down, after the star has disappeared from the skies, after the wise men have returned to their home in the east, and the shepherds have returned to their flocks, only then does the real work of Christmas begin.
Because we are at the stable in Bethlehem and relived the first Christmas Eve, because we met the Christ-Child, therefore the afterglow of Christmas must remain in our lives. With the glow of love in our neighbour even after Christmas. We must continue to help rebuild the world, to bring peace among people, and to fill the world with the music of His eternal love.

Title: CHRIST IS BORN
Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod.
( Matthew 2:1)
It is an irrefutable historical fact that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. About the exact date and month please leave it aside, as a Christian we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ everyday. Through this physical birth of God revealed Himself to all of humanity. The fact that humanity found it hard to accept this fact however, does not affect the authenticity of the event.
He who was born in Bethlehem more than two thousand years ago is still being born in the heart and life of modern man. This simple but overwhelming truth is often lost in the agitation of our busy lives.
In spite of the world's festivities around Christmastime, it remains true that if you have not experienced the birth of Christ in your personal life, you will never know the true joy and peace of christmas. Only Christ gives depth and peace to the joy of Christmas. The birth of Christ in Bethlehem is mere historical fact and nothing more than that, until He is born in life. Then you not only know Christmas, but also Christ of Christmas.
If you want to experience true Christmas joy, Christ must be born in your life and you have to place Him in the centre of your entire life. When His holiness permeates your life, it becomes "a merry Christmas" in the true sense of the word.

Title: GOD WITH US

"They will call him Immanuel" - means, "God with us".
( Matthew 1:23)
Christmas reminds us of the fact that God is with us, so that our imperfect love may be purified. Christmas teaches us the truth of self - sacrificing love. Christ came to earth and His people rejected Him. Nevertheless, He gave everyone who accepted Him the right to become children of God.
Although there was no room for Him in the inn, He guarantees everyone who loves Him and follows Him, a place in the house of His father.
Although He was despised and deserted by people, He invites everyone who is exhausted and burdened to find rest with Him. He had the power to come down from the cross and destroy everyone who mocked Him, but instead He died on the cross for all our sins. Although the vengeful world begrudged Him His life, He lovingly and mercifully promises eternal life to everyone who believes in Him. This is the language of Immanuel - God with us.
There is so much Lovelessness and hatred in today's world. It sours the relationship between man and God, and between man and man. But Christmas repeatedly tells us that love will triumph. Because God is love, He sent us His Son. If God loves us so much, we must also love one another. Let us profess our love anew this Christmas: to God, to our parents, to our marriage partner and to our fellow man. Then it will truly become a Christ-feast.

Title: THE SIGN OF GOD'S LOVE.

"This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger".
( Luke 2:12)
As with the arrival of a baby in a family, thousands of people yearned for the coming of the Child of Bethlehem: the prophets and the Old Testament believers ; His parents and the devout people of His time - Simeon and Anna; Zachariah and Elizabeth. Similarly we look forward to the annual commemoration of His coming with the honest prayer: "Grant us in these days a true Christ-feast.
God speaks to man in a thousand voices: on Sinai the thunder roars; in S***m and Gomorrah God speaks with fire and brimstone; in the life of Job God speaks through loss, illness and tribulations. But at Christmas God speaks through a child who beckons us back to the heart of God from a mother's arms and from a manger. God becomes a child and speaks to us in a language everyone can understand.
The Child of Bethlehem speaks to us about God's immeasurable love, and tells us exactly how much God loves the world! Will this love not compel us to love our children more and to desire their salvation? Having children always places before us a choice: to love and comfort them, or to neglect and sadden them. The Child of Bethlehem puts before us the same choice: will we love Him or will we sadden Him.

Title: TENDER COMFORT AT ADVENT - TIME.

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.
( Psalm 94:19)
There is a lot of sorrow surrounding Christmastime: some people are gravely ill; others have to come to terms with the effects of old age; for others Christmas will be the same again because the family circle has disintegrated irreparably through separation or death. There is much grief because death performs its grim task mercilessly, on our roads particularly, during this period.
There are parents who long painfully for their children who will not be home for Christmas because they have emigrated, or live too far away to be able to be home for Christmas, or because estrangement has set in, threatening to break the hearts of parents.
There are countless reasons why these days hold little joy for many. One of the most terrible is the loneliness of those who will miss a loved one this Christmas, due to death. Who can truly express or comprehend this longing.
The Child of Bethlehem had to travel these dark roads Himself as a man on earth, and therefore He is one with us in our grief and pain. He too had to sob for His loneliness at one time. He cares for you and He understands. He is mighty to touch your heart with consolation. Remain close to Him and you will experience the joy of victory, because His love will pull you through.
